Public speaking reminders
This week, my speakership training for the new business I am engaged in will commence. I am glad that W1N International offers free speakership training to their distributors because I really learned a lot from our training sessions. Believe it or not, I'm no speaker material. I almost flunked my Public Speaking course in college if not for my professor who allowed me to sing my way to a passing grade. But here I am now, just a speaking test away from accreditation.

Retirement fund options for the freelancer
I visited my parents yesterday with the boys. My mom is setting up a small beauty salon and she asked me to check it out. It's still a long way to completion because she's just counting on her monthly pension to fund her small business. Knowing about that got me to think about my own retirement.
As a freelancer, I do not have the luxury of employers taking care of my retirement fund. Although I still have 30 years to go, I'm now in a state of panic to save up for my retirement fund.

Drug addiction and diabetes
One of the recent comments I received in this blog was this question: "What has drug addiction got to do with diabetes?"
I posted about drug addiction rehab centers in the Philippines about a year ago and I was overwhelmed by the traffic and the response the post has been getting. Apparently, there is little information on the Internet about drug rehabilitation centers in the web and, because of my work as a health website editor, I had access to such a list. I thought of sharing it in this blog so people can have access to the contact details of these centers and I received a lot of messages thanking me for writing about it.

What I want for Christmas
Just the other day, my husband asked me what I want to receive from Christmas. I blurted out, "new eyeglasses and a bluetooth headset." Honestly, these are not wants but needs. I'm scheduled to have my eyes checked and I'm certain that my eye grade has become worse. I also need a bluetooth headset for my Galaxy Tab so I won't have a hard time answering calls.
After a while, I realized that I can go through Christmas this year without these. My original plan was to wait for my writing check so I can buy these things for myself though it would really be a blessing if my husband gives these to me on Christmas eve, hehehe.
But seriously, what I really want to receive this Christmas is happiness and peace within our family. I'm not really into writing about very personal stuff so I won't elaborate further. Let's just say that, I won't be spending this Christmas with someone I truly love and respect. I pray that everything between us goes back to normal soon.
What do you want for Christmas? Is it a new gadget like an xbox headset, perhaps? Or do we share the same wish?

I'm a Hulkmaniac
When we were younger, my siblings and I were not that much into watching the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) games. We did cheer for Ginebra especially if it's a championship match but basically it's because our dad was a Ginebra fan. Actually, we are more fond of watching the wrestling matches shown on TV. We each had our idols and mine is, of course, Hulk Hogan. The day he left WWF/WWE was the day I stopped watching wrestling. So just imagine my surprise and delight when I saw Hulk Hogan grace the season 10 of American Idol! See the video below:
In my opinion, there is no other wrestler like Hulk Hogan. There is a charisma in him that the others don't have. Seriously, my Ate Net and I often got emotional when he's hurt even though we know that the moves are staged. He was my personal superhero for the longest time.
How about you? Are you also fond of Hulk Hogan? If not, who's your wrestling superstar?

Stop and smell the flowers
I often hear the phrase "stop and smell the flowers," yet I never come to appreciate it until last Holy Week. I initially planned to have some quiet time by the beach but Laiya proved to be too noisy for me that night of Maundy Thursday. I was only able to have to think and reflect when we arrived at Villa Martha, Nagcarlan, Laguna on Good Friday.
Being at the foot of Mount Banahaw, cellphone signals over there were intermittent. It was a good thing, really, because I was able to finally detach myself from my gadgets. Even the husband was happy to just relax and stop worrying about office issues. That night, I was able to pray and reflect as I hear the rushing water of the brook in the background. I woke up the following morning recharged, happy, and ready for another challenging day.
I watched a scene from the movie, How Do You Know where Lisa (Reese Witherspoon) asked the panicking and problematic George (Paul Rudd) to shut up and just let them eat their meal in silence. Although it sounded kinda absurd for a first date, it was actually therapeutic for George because he was able to just think and listen to what his soul has to say.
I think I have to do that more. I'm always busy with work, managing the house, and bringing Rap to and from his summer classes that the only time I get to allot for myself is 6 hours of sleep. I better start to "stop and smell the flowers." But before that, I think it's best that I plant some gerbera daisies in our front yard for me to smell, LOL!

Almost a Doktora
Eleven summers ago, I and a schoolmate of mine were brought to Talim Island, Binangonan, Rizal as part of our summer immersion. It was my last summer in UP and I felt that I can't graduate until I get to experience the Ugnayan ng Pahinungod's Summer Immersion Services Program. I lived in the island for a month. Although I was a little disappointed that I was only sent to Binangonan (which was two towns away from where I live), I eventually understood the community's need for doctors.
In one summer, I almost became a doctor without scrubs. Armed with boxes of medicines, toothbrushes, and what-have-yous, I and my partner went to different barangays to help alleviate simple health problems of the people of the island. The people longed to have even just para-health workers in their communities but the government then cannot afford to send them one. I was in a bit of shock, actually, because it was almost the year 2000 and some of the people there died because of lack of free health care.
We were treated as health workers in the community. It was a big challenge for me because, I was only 18 and all I ever had was the limited health care training I had before being deployed to the island. Nevertheless, the people there treated us as what they would treat doctors in white lab coats. There was never a day in the island when I felt that I wasn't important in their community.
In one of our weekend medical missions, visiting volunteer doctors from UP taught me how to circumcise. Yep, at 18, I already saw and circumcised hundreds of you-know-whats in all ages, colors, and sizes! I think the oldest guy was 24 and was about to be married! They lined up because there wasn't a single hospital in the island. The handful of barangay health centers do not have medicines and tools to perform this simple surgical procedure. I wasn't even given a hospital uniform. All I had on me was a manila paper draped in front of my shirt to avoid spatters of blood.
It was my most memorable summer and I remember each day up to now. I thank God and UP for giving me the opportunity to be a "doktora" in that island. I believe it has helped me appreciate more what I have and to not want more than I can possibly have.

My Super Sweet Sixteen
Who among you has watched "My Super Sweet Sixteen" on MTV? Well, it was my first time to watch the show the other night and I was so shocked! "My Super Sweet Sixteen" is a documentary featuring coming out parties of wealthy kids in the US, Canada, and UK. The episode that we watched the other night was about the party of Diamond, the daughter of a drag racer, who I found to be such a spoiled brat!
When I turned 16, I didn't have a party. When I turned 18, I didn't even have a formal debut. Did it make me less of the person that I am today? No. But I guess, rich kids can have it all, don't they? Sad. It seems that their parents have more to worry about. At least, the worst that I can imagine my son asking for in the future are
hip hop clothes and I think I can live with that.

A Gloomy Christmas
When my father suffered a stroke in December 2008, my mother had to spend Christmas Eve at the hospital to look after him while my siblings spent Noche Buena at our house. We thought that it was the saddest Christmas we can ever have in the family. However, this year proved us all wrong. A cousin of mine is going to be laid to rest tomorrow afternoon, just hours away from Noche Buena. What could be more gloomy than that?
My kuya's passing was unexpected. I still can't fully understand why he chose to leave this earth during the Christmas season. We last saw each other during my sister's wedding in 2008 and I'm having this guilty feeling of not being there when he needed someone to talk to. I feel sorry for my favorite nana and for the whole family for having to suffer from this loss.
I've been playing Christmas songs for 3 days straight now just to feel the cheerfulness of the holiday season. Even my 2010 christmas gift list is not complete because I'm not in the mood to buy gifts and wrap them. I hope you can help us pray for the eternal repose of my cousin's soul and for the emotional healing of everyone in our family.

I Don't Own a Flower Shop
Look at my business card below and tell me what you think. Does it look like I own a flower shop?
Wala lang. I would just like to hear your honest opinion. I gave business cards during an alumni meeting and two schoolmates (who are as old as my father, by the way) asked me if I own a flower shop business. I found it funny. Was it because my last name is Flores and, without the eyeglasses, it appeared to be Flowers to them? Haha, Mauie's Flowers! Why not!
But seriously, I'm thinking of having a new set of business cards done. This time, it'll be less girly and more professional so I won't be mistaken as a flower shop owner again. I stumbled upon a site that does brochure printing and I might just ask for a quote for my new business card.

Loving Myself
During my parents' double birthday celebration last weekend, we scheduled a webchat with my cousins overseas who wanted to see my parents and other relatives. I heard the usual side remarks about my weight. But guess what? I wasn't affected at all. I'm now more confident about myself that I'm not at all affected when they tell me how fat I've become. Well, one cousin noticed how happy and confident my aura was and I'm glad that she made a compliment about that.
When you're like me who's struggling with weight issues almost half of my life, you'll definitely reach a point when you'll just give up and accept who you are. I've done a lot of dieting and some have worked while most have not. I took diet pills and drank slimming teas. Well, look at me now. I'm still as big as I can be.
A blogger friend of mine, Yapatoots of FatGirlNoMore.com, inspired me to "prettify" myself. So I went back to my kikay self and bought make-up, new clothes and shoes, and went back to a beauty routine I stopped doing eons ago. Well, it worked! No, it didn't make me thinner but it made me feel better about myself. I feel pretty everyday and as I get a little less anxious and depressed about how I look, I also started to shy away from emotional eating. I think with this this new state of mind, I can even join the other girls in jacuzzi tubs without even worrying whether I'll look like a whale shark around them.
I love myself. Nuff said.

When a door closes
A writing contract with one of my local clients ended just recently. I would have wanted to do more writing projects for that client but I understand how business is nowadays. I just hold on to the assurance that I will be contacted soon for once business picks up again.
When one door closes, another opens. I sure hope so. I still have one local client and another foreign client so I still have things to thank for. It's still 8 months to go before my youngest brother graduates from college so I need this steady stream of income. I won't mind reading about spring plungers for hours as long as I have a sure writing project.
I'm feeling kinda down about it but I loaded up my music playlist with happy songs to up my mood a little. I also feel comfort in the fact that I will have more time to update my blogs and take care of my boys. Bear with me, please.

Lovin' The Bed Weather
I love the rainy season for a couple of things and one of them is the "bed weather" it brings. I takes me a couple of alarm snoozes before I finally get up in the morning to prepare my boy for school. Ahh... if only rainy days meant school vacation in this country, I would be sleeping for hours!
One can definitely sleep comfortably in this kind of weather eve without special matouk bed linens in place. As the bed calls me tonight, I am uttering a prayer to families who are not sleeping in a comfy bed as ours. May they find comfort amidst the inconvenience and may they be guarded from harm and sickness.
Ho hum! Good night everyone!

3 Nights Away From My Boys
Hello from sunny Naga City! I arrived this morning to take care of some personal transactions in this city. I'm glad that it only took a day for me to run around the municipal complex and to finish my transactions. I regret not wearing my comfy ecco shoes today. Oh well... I'll be hopping on the bus to Manila tomorrow night and be reunited with my boys.
It's my first time to travel alone in more than a decade. Although I can say that it awakened the wanderlust and adventurous spirit in me, I still can't deny the fact that it took me ages to sleep decently just because my boys aren't with me. It's true that you'll realize a person's worth when you're not with them. Argh... 2 more nights to go. I can't wait to get home and hug them!

Oh, how time flies!
Senti Alert! Don't read if you're not feeling mushy enough to share the woes of a sad mommy.
It's been a week since classes here in the Philippines started and I'm left alone by myself again. Initially, I was relieved to finally have the house all to myself during the day. It's been a huge convenience to be able to work in our home with my boy in school. But now, I suddenly miss his company.
Oh my, how time flies. In two years, I'll have a high school student already. I fear the thought of searching through men's tuxedo shirts aisle in search for a prom outfit for him. I also fear of the time when he will leave home for college. Ah, these are the days when I ask God for another child. Sorry for sharing my sentiments.

I'm now a year wiser and happier!
I turn 32 today and I'm not ashamed to broadcast my age to the world. I embrace growing old and all the challenges it brings because I know that I have my family and friends with me. I also believe that turning a year older makes me a year wiser which is good.
While most men and women my age will look for testosterone boosters that work or inexpensive botox treatments, I'll stick to my most effective regimen to looking young - positivity. No more rants, no more ugly frowns. Just pure positive vibes to generate and share with everyone!

Multi-tasking as usual
If multi-tasking is a course is college, I would have gotten myself an A+. I'm such an expert in multi-tasking nowadays. Thanks to the tons of housework and writing tasks that keeps on piling up. How I wish it's the 27th already because that's the time when my househelper will return from his month-long vacation.
I badly need more time for myself. I haven't even visited my doctor in months! I wonder how my vital stats are from all this stress. Sorry if I am ranting at this hour. I guess, I'm just so tired. I bet I'll be dreaming of a hot tub with a gorgeous spa cover tonight.
Hay...

My 1st Starbucks 2010 Planner

Finally! I redeemed my Starbucks 2010 planner from The Podium branch last night. My 17 cups are all worth it! I love its every page. And because my husband allowed me to collect stickers for this planner, I gave him my tiny Moleskine planner to show my gratitude.

Doesn't it look nice? I chose Cherry since I remembered that I joined Maver's Starbucks planner contest and I indicated that I prefer Espresso if ever I win. After this one, I think I'm gonna try to collect stickers for another planner. Have I become a coffee addict now? Uh-oh, I guess somebody ought to buy me a jura capresso!
