Excited to meet mommies from the Pinay Mommies Community

On November 22, I and the other mommy blogger members of the Pinay Mommies Community will have a Grand Eye Ball. It's actually the 2nd year of the Grand EB but I wasn't able to join the first one because it coincided with an important family event. This year, I made sure that I'll be there because I want to meet the faces behind the mommy blogs that I have been reading. We have already been interacting with each other in Facebook that it feels that I already know them for a long time.

I've got a small problem, though. I still don't know what to give them. All of us were asked to bring tokens for everyone, if possible. It's already 10 days before our EB and I haven't prepared anything yet. If only I had a bigger budget, I could have already oredered from the online flowers site orderflowers.com. But since I can only afford Php 30 for each token, I might just have a some customized button pins made. Anyway, we have agreed that it's the thought that counts.

Dealing with emotional vampires

As a friend, I've always been a sponge. I lend a listening ear to friends who need someone to talk to. Oftentimes, I let them talk and I just keep my mouth shut. I believe that it's therapeutic to just let it all out. But you know, I'm just human and I also need to veer away from all the rants especially when I begin to feel that a friend is slowly developing into an emotional vampire.

What is an emotional vampire? An emotional vampire is one who can suck all the positive energy out of you. He/She can be a friend who constantly rants about everything that is happening in his/her life even when you know that it's not that bad. Or he/she can be someone who always puts you down and never tells you that you're doing good. Sadly, they can also be people close to you who always find a way to ask you for money and make you feel guilty when you can't help them financially.

I've been there and I've cried a million times from bearing all their negative vibes. But now I know better and I now know what to do. Here are some things I did to deal with these emotional vampires:

  • I now know when not to listen. I can manage a 5-minute ranting over the phone but I can now drop it if it's going to be longer than that. I also keep a lot of excuses under my sleeve should I need one to stop listening to a ranting friend.
  • I surround myself with happy songs, happy thoughts and happy people. When I feel emotionally drained, I turn up the volume and listen to Black Eyed Peas and Lady Gaga, seriously! I dance and think of happy thoughts. I call my sister and we just talk about nonsense on the phone and just laugh the afternoon away.
  • I am content with what I am and what I have. I can truly say that I am so thankful to the Lord for giving me this kind of life. I remind myself that I am blessed and there's no need to feel sad about anything.
  • I kept them busy, haha! One emotional vampire appeared to have nothing to do but to drain the happiness out of me so I asked her to just write an assignment for me to keep her busy. She needed money and she wanted me to lend her some. I was at my wits end with my deadlines and I don't need more stress. Good thing she accepted my job offer. I think she took so much time reading animal cuts reviews for the health article I asked her to write that she didn't have time to rant about her life anymore. Both our problems were solved, how genius of me!

I hope you found this post useful. Do not let yourself fall into an emotional vampire's trap. A healthy person is a happy person and vice versa. Stay away from the negative vibe.

Facebook Event Invitations

I became a member of Facebook during its early years but it was only in 2009 that I became active in the said social network. I saw it grow from something that looked inferior to Friendster to a social network that has surpassed even the functions of Yahoo mail. Most of my friends don't even send me email anymore but I do get a lot of Facebook mails.

One of the things I love most about Facebook is the Events page. We held two successful family celebrations this year with its help. More than 50 people attended Rap's birthday last May without me even printing a single invitation. That's amazing considering the efforts I made making his 1st birthday invitations years ago!

How about you? How has Facebook helped you?

Virtually renewing the ties that bind

When Mark Zuckerberg created Facebook in 2004, he only intended to provide a student directory for Harvard University where he was enrolled. Now, what started as a "Harvard thing" has got the world looped into the cyber social network.

Me with my college barkada. (L-R: Nurse Sharon, Atty. Mae, Teacher Jen, Atty. Claire, myself, and Atty. Abby.)

I am thankful to Zuckerberg for Facebook. It connected me to family and friends whom I haven't seen in years! For instance, I was able to reunite with my UP college block mates and my core barkada. I was in a block section during the my entire stay in UP Manila and our block stuck through thick and thin. With Facebook, its easier to update each other about our lives just like in the old days. It's difficult to gather everyone around for a get together because most of us are busy with our respective careers so Facebook becomes our virtual reunion venue.

Have you found old friends in Facebook? How did your virtual reunion go? I'd love to read about it!

Weekend Snapshot: Welcoming Babies To The Christian World

Yesterday, my family helped welcome two babies to the Christian World. They were held in two separate places, not to mention that one is in the suburbs. We were lucky that traffic is not so bad during Sundays and the weather did cooperate well.

The first baby in the picture, Jarvih (pronounced as Harvey) is the son of Tina Villa-Ignacio Hernandez and her husband Jeff. Tina is a dear friend of ours, a former student of my husband in Ateneo de Naga, and a bridesmaid in our wedding eight years ago. We are so happy that she is finally a mommy! We made a mistake of not attending the dedication ceremony in Greenbelt Makati though. We did not know that my husband was one of the godfathers. We left home early but had to pass by the bookstore and the department store to buy Ralph's book and another gift for the other baby's baptism. Look at Jarvih. Seems like he's not yet ready to forgive his Ninong for not attending the ceremony.

The other baby in the photo is a niece of ours. She is Keighlah Angelique, the daughter of my husband's cousin, Mok. We were not able to attend the baptismal rites in the church but we made it to the reception that was held in a private pool resort near their home in Biñan, Laguna. We were happy to see my husband's relatives and Ralph got to do some laps in the pool. We stayed for around two hours before we headed back to Manila. I had to do the groceries before we go home.

That was how my busy weekend went this week. How about yours?

Feel free to view my other weekend snapshot here.

Catholic Chat City

Half of my waking hours each day I devote to my online activities. Part of my online activities include chatting with friends and relatives either here or abroad. Those who know me personally also know that chatting played a big history in my life. I met my husband online and I never regret each day that I came to know him more through chatting even before we met. Chatting is an indispensable avenue for keeping in touch either with people you already know or those whom you want to get to know more.

Among all the chat rooms that are familiar to me, the Catholic Chat Room is one that made me quite interested. I am a practicing Roman Catholic and I revere every facet of my faith. But then, the internet is such a big place to be in, much more so if you're chatting with people from all parts of the world. Chatting with fellow Catholics gives me the freedom to talk about my faith more without the thought of creating an issue among others of different faith. The last thing I need would be a confrontation anyway. It also gives me the opportunity to discover how it is being a Catholic in other parts of the world. The Catholic population in our country is dominant and our Catholic rituals and traditions become a way of life. This is quite different for other Catholics who live in a place where Catholicism is not the dominant faith.

Whether it be for friendship, faith discussions, or finding a date of the same religion, the Catholic Chat Room is a place for online Catholics to be.

Happy Birthday, Atty. Claire!

Claire is one of my dearest friends in UP Manila. She was the first classmate that I met on the first day and we stuck with each other till graduation day.

My college barkada (L-R): Mae Lim, Jen Malana-Barasi, me, and Claire Corral

One of my fondest memories of her was in our first year of college. She had long hair back then and most of our block mates tease her because her has is always unruly. Blame it on the long ride from Caloocan to UP Manila. I took the liberty of combing her hair and the comb got stuck halfway through the strands. She never let me touch her hair again after that. I can't blame her!

I can say that she is one of the brightest and best in our class. She was diligent and strong-willed and this trait of hers made her breeze through life struggles with flying colors. I am so proud that she has finally achieved her dream of being a lawyer. (In our barkada of four, she and Mae became lawyers while me and Jen became teachers.) Juggling her duties as a single mom to Klarence, working in a government agency, and going to law school is not an easy feat for the weak of heart and spirit. Claire withstood all the challenges that came her way.

I know that her birthday this year is extra special because it's her first birthday as a lawyer. Hope she likes this simple tribute of mine.

Friends Are The Flowers In The Garden Of Life

This is a super late post. I should have posted this last week after receiving the badge from Abbie. I'm so glad that I have been tagged with this friendship flower. It's my first. Now, it's my turn to pass it on to my blogger friends.

::: Start copying here:::

Here are the rules for this tag:
1.) Copy the badge and put it on your blog,
2.) Link back who pass you this tag,
3.) Spread this tag to at least 7 or more bloggers who you think you are friend with.

"And lovely are the blossoms
That are tended with great care,
By those who work unselfishly
To make the place more fair.
And, like the garden blossoms,
Friendship’s flower grows more sweet
When watched and tended carefully
By those we know and meet.
And, if the seed of friendship
Is planted deep and true
And watched with understanding,
Friendship’s flower will bloom for you. "

I'm gonna pass it on to:

Rachel

Edelwieza

Fall 2008 TV Conversation

I recently joined dNeero, a social network that also lets you earn as you join or initiate conversations. I found it a relaxing way to interact with other people in the internet. This is the first conversation I joined. I watch TV rarely nowadays as my time away from work is either spent in managing the household, working out in the gym, plurking, or blogging. I have my favorite shows though that I cannot miss! My favorite shows are Oprah, CSI, and Heroes. We are just unfortunate that we still don't have cable service here in our new village. We still need to reach the 100 household minimum of Sky Cable before they come in and install cables. For now, I'll just make do with Studio 23 and Channel 9 reruns.

HS Get Together

I didn't have hesitations when Mel texted me one night and invited me to a get together of old high school classmates. Nazario was coming home from Bahrain and was getting married on the 26th. Last March, when Bench came home and we had an impromptu dinner with Mark and Nyor, I told them I seldom accept invitations from high school friends. You know how it is when old classmates meet and some would just brag about their "achievements" blah blah blah? I hate it when this happens. I don't know why I said yes to Mel but I had a gut feel that it would turn out fine.

It didn't. Last night turned out to be not just fine but GREAT! We were eight people all in all. Such a small group, but I think that's what made the difference. Nazario, Mel, Nyor, Mark, Eleanor, Leilanie, Daryl, and me spent the night chatting and laughing about old times.
I am glad I was with the right mix of people this time around. I wasn't really close to these people back in high school. I didn't have a barkada. I was too busy to have one. I had my choir, the student government, the clubs, and the CAT training going on. I guess if I had laid low a little bit I would have somebody to call my highschool bestfriend.
I was, somehow, able to catch up with what I missed. It made me think what kind of a classmate I was to them, then. For one, I didn't know that _____ and _____ were sweethearts!
We had dinner at Gerry's Grill Glorietta and sang our hearts out at Red Box in Greenbelt. Thanks to Nazario for this awesome treat! Hope he goes home often and wouldn't forget to call us up again. Hihihi!
