Saving up by repairing

Right now, my laptop is a vital tool in my career. That's why I almost lost my sanity the other day when it died down on me. I thought the computer crashed which only meant me losing all my files but, no. It literally died down on me because it lost power. I didn't notice that I run out of battery juice because I knew I kept it plugged in . Turns out, my laptop adapter had broken wires.

I knew I had to buy a laptop adapter right away but it would cost me 3K just to replace it with an original. Even the universal laptop adapters cost around a thousand bucks. I decided to repair it instead. I cracked the housing open, cut the broken wires, reconnected it, and voila! It's back up and working! Of course, I only had to seal it with an electric tape for lack of a heat shrink tubing. What's important is that it works! I definitely saved myself a thousand bucks for that!

Problems with Windows Movie Maker

I've been having problems with my laptop's Windows Movie Maker. I'm trying to publish the video of my niece's debut but it keeps on telling me that some files can't be found and that publishing cannot be continued. What's even more disappointing is that the message will only appear towards the end of the publishing process. That means I waste almost two hours for each publishing attempt just to find out that it can't publish the video!

I really feel so bad. I dedicated two days in editing videos and putting them together and then this! Now, I'm even more discouraged to buy the samsung projector I've been eyeing because I know that I can't even make decent home movies on my computer.

Can anyone recommend a light and reliable movie software?

Facebook Event Invitations

I became a member of Facebook during its early years but it was only in 2009 that I became active in the said social network. I saw it grow from something that looked inferior to Friendster to a social network that has surpassed even the functions of Yahoo mail. Most of my friends don't even send me email anymore but I do get a lot of Facebook mails.

One of the things I love most about Facebook is the Events page. We held two successful family celebrations this year with its help. More than 50 people attended Rap's birthday last May without me even printing a single invitation. That's amazing considering the efforts I made making his 1st birthday invitations years ago!

How about you? How has Facebook helped you?

Working With 3 Computers

When I started my work-at-home job, I was still using my trusty 8-year old desktop. It's performance was slow and the hard drive needed upgrading. Instead of upgrading my desktop, we bought a laptop. After a few months, I won a netbook in a blogging contest and I use this when I am mobile. Now, we have 2 laptops, 1 netbook, and 1 desktop computer. I never though we'd end up with all of these gadgets

Once in a while I still work on the desktop as some of my files are still saved in its hard drive. I also have files save in the netbook's hard drive. I am now thinking of a way of linking these three computers so I can access the files I need with ease. I read that a KVM switch can enable a single keyboard, video monitor, and mouse to control more than one computer at a time. I wonder if this can work on my gadgets? What do you think?

Points To Consider in Looking for an Anti Virus Software

When I bought my laptop in March, it came bundled with a Norton Anti Virus trial software that got me covered for free for 90 days. After that, I was prompted to buy a licensed version which I did not do for obvious reasons. One is that I find it too expensive to buy when I can opt to find a free anti virus software instead. My initial step was to download the latest free version of AVG but most of my blogger friends recommended that I switch to Avira. I did and, so far, I think it's doing good for me.

Other than the price, there are also other points I consider in looking for an antivirus software. Here are just some of them:
  • It should be light so as not to slow down the performance of my laptop;
  • It should also be an anti-spyware;
  • It should be able to scan, detect, and remove rootkits;
  • It should be able to detect threats from downloaded email; and
  • It should be able to scan, detect, and remove malware.
Did I miss out on some things? I'll appreciate if you have more tips to add. :)
