Our Home For The Weekend

In celebration of our 11th wedding anniversary, our small family of 3 is bileted at The Legend Villas for the weekend. We were fortunate to have arranged an early check-in and late check-out the following day. What made us more happy was that The Legend Villas still has their 40% promo until tomorrow!

Since my husband and I promised each other that we'll spend this weekend with our boy work-free and worry-free, I have to leave my small office table with this cute pendant lighting now and join them in our private jacuzzi. Oh yeah, I'm loving this kind of life. Even if it's just for this weekend.

Leather Gift for 3rd Wedding Anniversary

A close friend is celebrating her 3rd wedding anniversary next month and he is asking my help in choosing a gift for his wife. Don't you think it's unusually sweet for a husband to plan mushy stuff like anniversaries? I just had to go ahead and help him.

So upon doing some research, I found out that 3rd year anniversary gifts are supposed to be made of leather since it's the Leather Year. I found the cutest and most adorable gift for his wife.

Isn't this bear the cutest?

I love wedding anniversaries. For me, it's the testament of a couple's love for one another. That's why I usually take time to search for anniversary gifts by year. How about you?

Blogging With The Husband Soon

Yay! My husband has finally decided to join me in my blogging adventures. Could it be that he wants to join me in blog events? Hahaha, I'm not really sure. But I'm all happy and excited at the same time that he showed interest in blogging.

My husband is smarter and more creative than I am and I know he'll have lots to write about. Since he's still new to blogging, we're planning on having a writing project that we'll work on together. I think it would be a "he said she said" format but I'll also give each of us solo posts where we can write about things that interest couples like us. He can probably write muscle milk reviews or whatever he wants to write about. Sounds exciting, don't you think so?

I'm still thinking of a domain name for our future site. Do you have any suggestions?

10-Year Marriage Contract Expiry

This has been a laughing matter between my husband and I over the week. We're celebrating our 10th wedding anniversary today, you see. But really, the proposed 10-year expiry on marriage contracts is not funny.

The proposed bill was put forward by women's party list group Isa-Ako Babaeng Astig Aasenso (1-ABAA). Several lawmakers have already expressed disapproval upon the proposal and among them are House Speaker Prospero Nograles and Rep. Ruffy Biazon.

I am also expressing my sincere disapproval on this proposal. I am concerned about how it will affect families and our society itself should this be passed. The sanctity of marriage is bypassed. I think that there are better ways on how 1-ABAA can help women in empowering themselves and this is not one of them.

The Love Month Meme: How I Met My Dadijun

The Filipino Mom Blog is hosting the Love Month Meme this Love Month. This is my entry for this week.

Here's how I met my Dadijun.

We met in cyberspace, in a chatroom, believe it or not. I was in my last year in college, he was already working. I was just looking around, he was nursing a broken heart. We didn't actually jived at first, he thought I wasn't female because of the nick I was using. (I used my then bf's name, hehehe...) Every chatroom schedules a grand EB, and that is where we met. Actually, up to now, I do not remember meeting him. He said we were introduced by a common friend. After that, he sent me pm's and the getting-to-know-you stage began.

I was committed to someone back then. Obviously, I wasn't happy and serious about the relationship (or else I wouldn't be looking around, right?). I found relief in our chats. Hay naku, if you've known my bf back then, maiinis kayo sa kababawan. As in walang kwentang kausap. Kaya lang gwapo kaya nakakapanghinayang na i-discard. (Ay, maldita at ganda-gandahan ako noon fyi!) Si Daddyjun, ang sarap kausap. He's smart and sensitive.

After sometime, we had our first date. I told my bestfriend and I wrote in my diary these exact words: not boyfriend material. The second date came after two or three months pa yata. I introduced him to my barkada and they liked him instantly. Eh paano ba naman ipinag-drive kami hanggang Bataan for one of our gimmicks! Then came numerous dates after that Finally, we became a couple. And, guess what, we married after 11 months of going steady. Why so soon? Hehehe... go figure!

I was the one who chose our themesong. Naman, first time ko lang magka-theme song. I find it corny. Pero pag in-love ka pala nagiging corny ka. Anyone At All is part of the official soundtrack of You've Got Mail. Our sorority sponsored the premiere of the movie and I invited him to come. Guess it somehow reflected our story, too. (Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan fell in love in cyberspace, too.)

Enjoy listening to our song. I included the lyrics below so you can sing or read along with it.

Anyone at all - Carole King

Anyone At All
by Carole King (You've Got Mail OST)

Funny how I feel more myself with you
Than anybody else that I ever knew.
I hear it in your voice, see it in your face
You've become the mem'ry I can't erase.

You could have been anyone at all,
A stranger falling out of the blue.
I'm so glad it was you.

It wasn't in the plan, not that I could see.
But suddenly a miracle came to me.
Safe within your arms, I can say what's true
Nothing in the world I would keep from you.

You could have been anyone at all,
An old friend calling out of the blue.
I'm so glad it was you.

Words can hurt you if you let them.
People say them and forget them.
Words can promise, words can lie,
But your words make me feel like I can fly.

You could have been anyone at all,
The net that catches me when I fall.
I'm so glad it was you.

You could have been anyone at all.
An old friend calling out of the blue.
I'm so glad it was you.

You could have been anyone at all,
I'm so glad it was you.

Daddyjun, up to now, I'm still glad it was you. Thanks for loving me. Love you more!

V-Day Plans?

Nope, I am not writing this to share our plans for Valentine's Day. Actually, I have only one concrete appointment during that day and that is to accompany my boys to the dentist. We have to go back to the dentist that day because they need to have their temporary fillings replaced. Our dentist was even hesitant to set the appointment because she thought that we will be out of town during the weekend but I gave her the go signal to put us on the list. Our Valentine's Day activities will probably depend on how long the dentist appointment will be.

Don't get me wrong, but it is totally fine with me. We don't usually celebrate Valentine's Day as special as other couples do. We just have a dinner date in a not so formal restaurant that would not require my boys to be in tuxedos and me in a gown. There were other V-nights when we just enjoyed peace and quiet, and maybe a bowl of popcorn and a great DVD, in the living room. For me, it's not how you celebrate the day but who you enjoyed it with that matters more.

Never Leave Your Partner Behind

This is a rule of thumb among firemen. Never leave your partner behind, especially during a fire. Never in my wildest thoughts that you can use the same mantra in a marriage. People nowadays look upon the sacrament of marriage as just a contract between the husband and the wife. Only a few good couples look at it as covenant between them and God. Fireproof is a movie that made me remember that God really is a part of our marriage. I feel that it is fitting for my first post for "The Love Month" to be about fireproofing a marriage.

The movie is about a young couple, Caleb and Catherine, with a marriage on the rocks. They both wanted to get a divorce but the Caleb's father took some time to talk to him and gave him the "Love Dare" to save their marriage. The "Love Dare" consisted of loving acts that he would need to do for forty days for his wife. Each page was lovingly written (in the dad's own writing) for his son to enlighten him in not only winning back the love of his wife but also to recognize his need for bringing God inside their marriage.

The 40-day love dare reminded me so much of "A Purpose Driven Life". Both are journeys taken a day at a time with God. The only difference is that the Love Dare focuses on fireproofing a marriage. It was really a very wise thing for the producers of the movie to make an analogy between fires and temptations in marriages. You see, Caleb's best friend in the movie told him that being fireproof does not mean avoiding a fire. It just means that something that is fireproof can withstand a fire. It just works out the same with marriages. A marriage is always tested with many temptations. In the movie, some of the temptations were anger, selfishness, disrespect, and lust. For a marriage to be fireproof, which means to be temptation free, God has to be in the center of the relationship.

I do not want to be much of a spoiler because I really want you to have the same experience of being touched by this movie. It is not yet available in the Philippines but you can purchase it online through Ebay. I guess it will be available in Christian book stores and DVD stores soon.

Was It Just Coincidence?

My husband and I agreed that he will be picking up from Sta. Lucia East last night after Rap's taekwondo class. Rap and I were with my mother-in-law because we went straight to Rap's class after working out from the nearby gym. After Rap's class, I decided that we wait at the basement food court for my husband to arrive. A few minutes before the time I expected my husband to arrive, I left the table and went up to the next level so I can cross the street to the nearest off site ATM.

I had a hard time crossing the street that connects the mall's two buildings. I was even kind of pissed off with the guard on duty because he didn't even bother to stop the cars so I can cross. When I had the chance to cross, I spotted a black Hyundai Tucson stopping a few feet away from me, right in front of the ATM where I was supposed to go. It was ours! In my mind, I thought that my husband already saw my crossing the street and that was the reason why he stopped. With a wide smile on my face, I went near and knocked on the glass. Guess what? He was suprised to see me outside the car. I caught him trying to send a message using his Blackberry. He said it was supposed to be a message informing me that he's already there. Another thing was that he was asking me if we would like to have dinner somewhere else which was exactly what I was also thinking of asking him. Now, was that just coincidence or what?

After eight years (going nine this January!)of being married, I notice that my husband's thoughts and mine tend to get more connected. Most of the times, we get to be surprised that we're thinking or planning the same things at the same time. I believe I was really able to marry my soulmate.

Self-assessment

My husband and I have been hitting on each other's nerves lately. He told me that I'm too serious and that I shouldn't take everything he says like he means it. He told me that I'm always judging everything that he says and I take them against me. I can't take most of his jokes, lately. I think they are foolish and immature.

Today, during lunch, we had our recent spat.We have just attended our son's PTA meeting in school and we were having a conversation on how only 6 sets of parents and guardians came in my son's section. He said something like "Pwede naman pala eh." and I got irritated as usual. I went like "Ewan ko sa iyo." and I said something like it's our only son's school event we were talking about and for it me it was on top of my priorities. Then he asked me if I ever assess myself when I react like that and that he only meant it as a joke (again!). I kept quiet and thought about it which was hard because deep inside I was fuming mad.

In my 30 minutes of silence before our lunch was served (service is that bad at Floring's SM City Taytay), I realized some things. I think that I have been looking at life differently now. I am more serious and uptight and in doing so I hurt the ones that should enjoy life with me the most. I can blame this attitude of mine on so many outside factors. It can be because of the stress I encounter everyday from work. It can be because of the worries I have on my health. It can be because I am so dam#* tired and I lack sleep. Still, there's no one else to blame but me. So I just nudged myself and told my sub-conscious to always be on the watch for my over-reactive moments. Less outburst = less conflict = happy relationships.

But then again, am I being a bad person for being this way?

The Art of a Good Marriage

The Art Of A Good Marriage

Wilfred Arlan Peterson

Happiness in marriage is not something that just happens.
A good marriage must be created.
In marriage the little things are the big things.
It is never being too old to hold hands.
It is remembering to say "I love you" at least once a day.
It is never going to sleep angry.
It is at no time taking the other for granted;
the courtship should not end
with the honeymoon, it should continue through the years.
It is having a mutual sense of values and common objectives.
It is standing together facing the world.
It is forming a circle of love that gathers the whole family.
It is doing things for each other, not in the attitude of duty or sacrifice,
but in the spirit of joy. It is speaking words of appreciation
and demonstrating gratitude in thoughtful ways.
It is not looking for perfection in each other.
It is cultivating flexibility, patience,
understanding and a sense of humour.
It is having the capacity to forgive and forget.
It is giving each other an atmosphere in which each can grow old.
It is a common search for the good and the beautiful.
It is establishing a relationship in which the independence is equal,
dependence is mutual and the obligation is reciprocal.
It is not only marrying the right partner, it is being the right partner.

Tonight I am posting this poem for my sister who's getting married on the 19th and my brother whose marriage is undergoing a rough ride lately. I am now somehow stuck in the middle of being happy and sad. I think this is what being in limbo is all about. Hmm... life can play a real cruel joke.

We are all excited in the union that is to be solemnized next week. My sister and her fiance will already celebrated their 11th anniversary as BF/GF last June 2007. It is really about time that they say their "I Do's". We are all busy with the preparations. Being the Matron of Honor, I am in-charge of almost everything. We're down to our last five days and I still need to get the misalette printed and bound, the souvenirs bought tomorrow , Mama's gown, Papa's pants, and Dadijun's and Rap's Barong Tagalog bought on Monday, the Reception Repertoire uploaded on my Ipod (we will just hook the Ipod to the sound system), and the flowers bought at Dangwa on Friday night. Toxic but still exciting.

On the other hand...

The last week had been a hell of a rollercoaster ride of emotions for me. I felt the hurt in my brother's heart seeing that his marriage is on the rocks. I am now helping them in a way that I know is best, that is, letting them heal their wounds on their own. I pray that the time that they are now spending apart from each other will help them realize the value of the marriage that they are throwing away.

I hope that not only my sister and my brother get the most out of reading this poem, but all the married couples who read this.

Eight Years of Marriage!

Today we are celebrating our eight year anniversary. We're officially past their so-called "7th year itch".

Contrary to what other people think, we are not always a perfect couple. What they always see is a picture of marriage bliss. They see us like a couple who's always goofing around, smiling and laughing at each other's jokes every single minute of the day. But we do have our petty quarrels and arguments. I've become irritable too many times. Maybe I'm just tired from work and I just had so many things to do with so little time. Maybe it's because of the hormonal imbalance I'm having. Or maybe it's just because I feel that I can be my true self when I'm with him. That I can be a bitch on bad days because I know he will always understand. I hope he does always. And I do hope he knows that I'm truly sorry for all my shortcomings. That I'm always trying to make up for everything because I know he does everything for us and he doesn't deserve an ounce of bitchiness from me.

I thank God for giving the most perfect person for me. I found myself a bestfriend and a good and responsible husband. He has accepted me for who I am and who I am not. He fills my weakest spot and gives me strength and confidence to overcome my fears. He brings out the best in me, always. It's my constant prayer that we be together always.

I love you more... always, Dadijun! Happy 8th Anniversary!

What's Your Number?

I always listen to Mo Twister on the Magic on the way to work. Today, there was a caller who initiated a discussion about loving men who had had sex with other women in previous relationships (or at least getting affected with his sexually active past). This girl goes, "I don't have a number" that meant that she won't get affected even if her guy had already done it with countless of other women before her, no questions asked. The moment I heard her, I rolled up my eyes and a thought bubble went out of my head that said "Hmp! Ipokrita!" Stupid girl, how could you not get affected?

Let me first define what "getting affected" means to me. To me, it means that I still love my man with all my heart but I will definitely get hurt with his past. What I mean is, I won't act like stone and just tell him that it's OK because it's not. But it won't mean that I will love him less than before I heard about his past.

Here's my point of view: I don't care about the number BUT I will really be pissed off if he tells me that it's just sex and nothing deeper than that. Maybe I'll let the high school experiences pass because it's all part of the sexual discovery phase that men go through (maybe some women too but that excludes me!). Or I can forget about up to 2 one-night-stands, anything more than that is just so disturbing. I think that making out casually with different women says more about a man's psychological state of mind. So why won't I get affected at all? It's a different story if my man tell me that it was all part of his failed relationships. At least I can sense some love in the air and not just plain pure libido.

Mo says that 4 will be a safe number for him. More than that and he will think twice about the girl he's dating. How about you? What's your number? Guys and girls, I'd love to read about what you think.

Why I Love Being Married

An article of the same title by Andrea Pasion-Flores in the November 2006 issue of Good Housekeeping Philippines inspired me to write my own view on this matter.

Daddyjun and I have been married for six years. We will be having our 7th Wedding Anniversary on January 15, 2007. That would be, as everyone warned me, the official start of the "7th Year Itch". Scary. But I'm excited to go through it and survive it! Yeah, that's the spirit! Why do I love being married? Let me count the reasons why...

First, I get to hear a daily dose of I Love You's. Isn't it great to hear that you are loved, constantly, at least twice a day? Sometimes, I feel that we have become too familiar with the sentence that it has become just one of those expressions. Like when you do a favor for a friend and she goes "You're a life saver! I love you, talaga!" But it's a different thing when you hear it from your husband. Up to now, I get kilig when I hear it from him. It's like falling in love all over again.

Second, I have a 24-hour best friend. Daddyjun has become my best friend ever since we have become a couple. He's a confidant in every true sense of the word. He's a good listener, we can just laze around on the couch and talk about anything under the sun for hours. If you're a woman, you'll understand the importance of having someone listen to you anytime of the day. He knows my deepest secrets. I know I can count on him no matter what. As long as we're together, I know I have somebody I can share my hopes and dreams with.

Third, I feel important. Daddyjun asks my opinion in every decision he makes. It may be as simple as his office get up for the day or as complicated as our financial undertakings. This is a big deal for me especially now that I am not able to contribute financially. He makes me in-charge of everything. In our home, I am in command.

Lastly, I love being married because I enjoy being part of a whole. It's a natural psychological human need. I love it when I am being introduced as my husband's other half. Daddyjun makes me feel that I belong to him but he gives me room to grow. He makes me feel that I am his and because of this he is going to take good care of me. We are not a picture of marriage bliss. We have our fights and misunderstandings. Most of the times, I get to say things that I regret saying to him. He has habits that I hate. I had done things that got him disgusted. At the end of the day, we try to resolve all of this.

As the saying goes, marriage is not always a bed of roses. For me, it is an adventure and I choose to enjoy every minute of it, even if I get scrapes and bruises along the way. Wounds heal, anyway. It's the learning that you get from these wounds that counts. I just got lucky that God gave me the best adventure buddy.

Burned Out

Someone close to me is suffering psychologically. We have recently discovered that what's making her sick is not because of her physical weaknesses but of psychological stress.

I'm sad because I consider this someone as a pillar of strength. All along, as it turned out lately, she was just letting us see a happy face. I'm sad because I see the kids suffering, too. They're coping in their own way. I had a recent talk with the older child(who is just thirteen) and she tells me everything she can think of telling me. She needs someone to talk to. The younger one is still absorbed with his cards and his friends. The husband is kind and gentle. He also helps in the household chores. His only fault is that he can't financially provide more for his family.

How does a mother become so depressed and unfulfilled?

When one is young, restless, and in love, one cannot see the bigger picture. The time comes when one realizes that, yes, love, ALONE, doesn't make the world go round. Marriage is not made up of love ALONE but also of bills, bills, and some more bills.
