KOTEX® Steps Up for the Modern Working Woman

We are living in the age of the Modern Maria Clara.

Gone are the days when societal norms forced women to compromise their dreams and passions. Timidity, subservience and helplessness are now a thing of the past; women are now empowered to be outspoken, dynamic, self-motivated, proactive and confident. It’s no surprise that more and more Filipinas are now occupying a large percentage of the workforce, if not making their way up the corporate ladder.

However, the Modern Maria Clara still requires a respite from the chaos of daily life to find the energy to pursue her goals and passions. Unfortunately, that time of the month can transform bedtime into an absolute nightmare. The fear of leakage and making a mess on her bed sheets can steal precious hours of sleep, mess up her schedule and ruin her mood the next day.

The effect wasn't good either, as it made my hair more unmanageable. Pantene's new Nature Care Collection may be the solution to my problem.

Pantene Nature Care Collection combines trusted Pantene Pro-V technology with the natural power of the cassia flower, aloe vera, calendula, and ginger to produce Cassia Complex. Thus, hair is cared for and conditioned while keeping it full of life.

Filipino Moms Need to Wake Up from the Dirty Truth about Bar Solution

Do Filipino mothers really know best?

Filipino mothers are known to have some of the world’s cleanest practices in running their households. They ensure their kids take a bath everyday and shower before going to bed. They hand wash clothes so that they are stain-free and smelling fresh for their family’s use. And they encourage their children to brush their teeth three times a day. However, because of the many chores and costs that come with maintaining the home, mothers are sometimes forced to improvise or maximize consumption of certain household products. For example, some mothers use leftover laundry soap to wash their plates. They think in this process they are saving up, but unknown to them are the horrors behind this practice.

A recent study reveals that ten out of ten Filipino households who use bar solution consisting of used laundry soap, water and a sponge clean their plates with bar solution dirtier than a toilet seat cover.

CordLife, Making Cord Blood Banking in the Philippines Possible

Have you read/watched the novel/movie, "My Sister's Keeper?" In the story, the younger sister was conceived as a savior sibling, a perpetual donor for the older sister who was dying from leukemia. The younger sister's umbilical cord blood's stem cells were harvested at birth to provide treatment for her older sister. Do you know how precious umbilical cord blood is?

TV personality Lexi Schulze Berenguer-Testa entrusted her baby's cord blood to  CordLife.

Umbilical cord blood or cord blood is literally the blood that is found in a newborn's umbilical cord. Normally in the past, it's thrown away along with the mother's placenta until recent researches has shown that it can provide blood-forming stem cells. These blood-forming stem cells are capable of developing into red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets, which are all present in our blood. Thus, it has become a breakthrough treatment for certain kinds of leukemia, anemia, and diseases of the immune system.

Omega-3 Academy Asia: Raising awareness about omega-3’s health benefits

Just sharing a press release from Cenovis Fish Oil.

With an aim to raise awareness and understanding on the role and use of omega-3 in one’s health, the Omega-3 Academy Asia was formally launched today by a distinguished panel of medical experts from various fields as well as key executives from sanofi-aventis, makers of Cenovis Fish Oil.

Established by a multi-disciplinary panel of professionals from fields like clinical nutrition, cardiology, family health and diabetology, the Omega-3 Academy Asia is comprised of expert panel of medical professionals from across Asia, who have come together to increase understanding and education on the role and use of omega-3.

Sponsored by sanofi-aventis Consumer Health, the Omega-3 Academy Asia is an Asia-specific organization chaired by Professor Andrew Sinclair from Deakin University in Australia, with members from Korea, Thailand and the Philippines’ Dr. Tommy Ty-Willing, an endocrinologist and Dr. Eugene Reyes, a cardiologist. The Omega-3 Academy Asia is committed to increasing awareness and understanding of omega-3 by undertaking a number of initiatives to highlight the impact of decreased omega-3 intake in current Asian diets and convey the associated health benefits of increasing omega-3 consumption.

Omega-3 Fish Oil is a type of polyunsaturated ‘good’ fat that is important to our health. However, omega-3 can’t be made by the body, so it needs to be obtained through our diets. Omega-3 fatty acids can be found in foods such as fish and plants, with shellfish and oily fish providing the highest quantities. Omega-3 can play a role in achieving good health and can protect against a number of diseases.

Omega-3 fatty acids DHA & EPA are needed for every cell in the body and are particularly important for the health of vital organs such as the heart and brain. Omega-3 fatty acids DHA & EPA can play a role in achieving optimal health and protection against disease by influencing the way cells and tissues in the body respond to external signals.

Many clinical studies since the early 1970s have shown a link between high consumption of oily fish and lower levels of heart disease, prevention of heart conditions, vision impairment and joint diseases such as arthritis.

Omega-3 is also essential for brain growth and development as the brain contains EPA and DHA, and has been shown to be important for an unborn child’s brain and age-related cognitive decline.

International guidelines recommend that an adult should consume 500 milligrams of fish oil per day. This can be achieved by eating 2-3 servings of oily fish per week. For people with heart disease, double this amount is recommended (1,000 milligrams of fish oil per day).

Omega-3 intake across the Asia region is considered to be below daily recommended guidelines, yet specific intake levels vary greatly from country to country, and there is a specific lack of clinical data on omega-3 Fish Oil intake in the Philippines. To address this, the Omega-3 Academy Asia will soon begin an investigation into the omega-3 intake of people living in Korea, Thailand and the Philippines by conducting new clinical research and reviewing existing data. The findings will hopefully be available in 2012. As a first step, the group wants to establish a baseline on the current intake of omega-3 Fish Oil in the three countries, before commencing educational and awareness-raising initiatives designed to increase Omega-3 consumption in the near future.

Says sanofi-aventis marketing manager Rachelle Gamboa: “In addition to the significant research and development (R&D) that is invested into the production of effective healthcare solutions, sanofi-aventis Consumer Healthcare invests a great deal of time and resource into providing vital consumer and healthcare professional information and support to improve the health and well‐being of people across Asia, and the rest of the world. We are optimistic that Filipinos will find the Omega-3 Academy Asia to be a great resource as far as their health and well-being is concerned.”

PRESS RELEASE: People with Diabetes Endure Swim Across English Channel to Raise Money for JDRF

Using the waterproof* Animas® Vibe™ insulin pump and CGM system, people with diabetes participate in Channel Swim Relay.

HIGH WYCOMBE, 21 July 2011 – Six swimmers congregate along the Dover coastline today, to participate in a 17-hour relay swim across the English Channel to France. The relay event, sponsored by Animas®, aims to raise money for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) and celebrate people with diabetes performing at their best. To date, the relay team has already raised more than £1,900 for the JDRF, through their ‘Just Giving’ website at: www.justgiving.com/animas-swimmers.

Three of the swimmers participating in the Channel Swim Relay are people with Type 1 diabetes, and will not only have to overcome the physical exertion of the challenge and cold water temperatures, but will also fight to keep their blood sugar levels under control throughout this long, arduous swim. Each has lived with Type 1 diabetes for more than 10 years, and is able to participate in the event and control their blood sugar levels thanks to the help of their Animas waterproof* insulin pump.

“Our team has spent the last seven months training for this exciting event, and we look forward to making history as we show the world that people with diabetes can truly live a life without limits,” said Mark Blewitt, an experienced long distance Channel swimmer and captain of the Channel Swim Relay team. “I have been living with Type 1 diabetes for many years, and am thrilled that my Animas® waterproof* insulin pump is enabling me to participate in this long-distance swim, while closely monitoring and controlling my blood sugar levels.”

The Channel Swim Relay will begin near Shakespeare’s Cliff/ Samphire Hoe (which is between Folkestone and Dover), and ends near Cap Gris Nez, between Boulogne and Calais. The total swimming time can be from 12 to 17 hours depending on the current. The temperature of the sea in July will be approximately 15-18 degrees celcius. Swimmers will also have to endure a few water hazards, such as seaweed, and jellyfish.

“I’m excited to be taking on this major challenge,” said Matt Cox, a member of the Channel Swim Relay team. “My son was also diagnosed with diabetes and I want to show him that he doesn’t have to adjust his goals in life because of his diabetes. I'm hoping this challenge will help Jack and other people with diabetes strive to achieve exactly what they want in life.”

Cox added, “I feel confident about the swim challenge ahead. The waterproof* element of both the Animas® 2020™ and Animas® Vibe™ is a bonus to me as I can carry on with my training feeling reassured that I can continue to control my blood sugar levels. Since wearing an Animas® pump, my daily lifestyle has improved and I have much more freedom now that I don’t have to carry around syringes to take my insulin doses.”

More than 2.6 million people in the UK are currently living with diabetes, with approximately 10% of those having type 1 diabetes. [1] If the condition is not managed properly people can develop a complication called hypoglycaemia, as a result of blood sugar levels dropping below the normal range, leading to unconsciousness if left untreated. [2] Fear of hypoglycaemia is the strongest barrier to regular physical activity in adults with type 1 diabetes. [3]

“We are delighted to be working in collaboration with Animas to celebrate people with diabetes performing at their best,” said Sarah Johnson, director of policy and communications at the JDRF. “This relay proves that you don’t have to be an Olympic swimmer to achieve goals like this. We want to continue to encourage people with Type 1 diabetes to feel in control of their condition. Advances in pump tools have made it easier for people to administer insulin and monitor their blood sugars more closely so that they can effectively manage their disease.”

To find out more about the Channel swimmers, please visit www.facebook.com and search for the ‘Animas® Channel Swim’ group page. To pledge your support for the Channel Swim Relay and the JDRF, please visit the ‘Just Giving’ website at: www.justgiving.com/animas-swimmers.

WOW Direct Sales' World of Wellness

Just sharing with you the WOW Direct Sales press release which was sent to me. Although I haven't tried their products yet, I find their products good since they are all natural and organic. Plus, most of the products are locally manufactured.

Wellness sales company boosts OFW entrepreneurship

OFWs displaced by recent world events can find alternative livelihood in a new direct sales company. World of Wellness (WOW), offering general health and wellness products through direct sales, has opened its doors to this new breed of entrepreneurs.

“In light of recent world events, more Filipino workers are back in the country for good. We think that WOW Direct Sales will provide them a good, profitable opportunity that will allow them to stay and earn here,” said Sheila Mae Velilla, President and CEO of WOW Direct Sales Corporation.

Velilla established WOW Direct Sales on the principles of fair trade, social advocacy and business entrepreneurship. By offering premium quality products at affordable prices, with a competitive commission plan, the company is confident of attracting and growing its sales force.

WOW Direct Sales has diverse product lines focusing on health, beauty, and wellness. These include organic wines and herbal supplements; premium skin whitening and age-defying lines; botanical hair care products; natural health juices, real crystals and other wellness products.

Most of the products are locally manufactured, with a few exceptions: the juices are made in the USA, the wines are from Spain and the whitening products are made in Japan.

“Considering that our products have active natural, organic, and highly beneficial ingredients and that they are clinically proven to be very safe and effective, they are very competitively priced,” Velilla added.

The daughter of successful entrepreneurs, Velilla is prominent in the pharmaceutical trading business. She heads other companies but is busy growing WOW Direct Sales, which is a spin-off of Cory Quirino World of Wellness, her retail co-venture with beauty and wellness guru Cory Quirino. “CQWOW received hundreds of feedback from customers that they found our products of high quality and affordable. There were also lots of inquiries on whether they can sell Cory Quirino products as a distributor because they believed in these products,” she said.

With an initial investment of P1 million, Velilla established WOW Direct Sales and launched the company last year. To date, WOW Direct Sales has wellness centers in Pampanga, Bulacan, Mandaluyong, Pasay, Las Pinas, Makati, and Isabela. It has over a thousand dealers and is set to open more centers in Cavite, Ilocos Norte, Batangas, Laguna, Bicol, Quezon, Cebu, and more centers in other cities in Bulacan and Pampanga.

Velilla admits that the direct sales market may be saturated, but she believes that WOW Direct Sales can still capture a relatively significant share of it given its competitive products and excellent marketing team. “Our dealers are generously rewarded based on their sales and sponsoring from a personal or group contribution. Their membership and privileges are for a lifetime,” she said.

“WOW Direct Sales believes that real wealth is in health and investments on health should be made affordable. The more who are given access to this provision, the healthier the nation would be,” she added.

WOW DIRECT SALES CORPORATION is duly registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission under SEC # CS201017782 on October 29, 2010. Its office is located at # 108 Scout Delgado Street, Quezon City, with telephone numbers (+632) 9289969 and (+632) 4418969.

Tour of Hope 2011: Going the Xtra Mile Against Cervical Cancer

500 kilometers in 5 days to save 500 lives. This is the challenge that is in store for the dedicated cyclists of the Tour of Hope 2011 which is happening starting on May 28, 2011. This year's Tour of Hope aims to raise funds for cervical cancer prevention vaccination drives and seminars. And yes, during the tour from Manila to Paoay, Ilocos Norte, 500 women will receive a vaccine against cervical cancer.

The Tour of Hope is organized by Bravehearts in partnership with Team David’s Salon and GlaxoSmithKline. As explained by Bravehearts prexy, Abbygale Arenas-de Leon, the tour aims to inspire women to take action against cervical cancer. The sad truth is, cervical cancer claims the lives of 12 women in the Philippines everyday. Meanwhile, Dr. Cecilia Llave who is Program Director of the Cervical Cancer Prevention Network (CECAP) explains that cervical cancer is highly treatable especially when diagnosed early. Not only that, living a healthy lifestyle and getting vaccinated helps in its prevention.

Abbygale Arenas-De Leon posing together with the newly-vaccinated bikers, Lily Lomague (left)
and Marge Buot (right) after the ceremonial vaccine of bikers.

Since its start in 2008, The Tour of Hope has helped raise around 2 million pesos to help finance cervical cancer screening programs and lectures. Moreover, the event organizers have formed partnerships with local government units to conduct lectures during each stopover of the tour to local communities with marginalized groups who display poor health-seeking behavior.

Team David Salon led by David’s Salon owner David Charlton and Ms. Tessa Prieto-Valdes are well known supporters of The Tour of Hope. This year, Team David Salon will again join the fight against cervical cancer while Ms. Tessa Prieto-Valdes will organize a separate fundraising activity for Bravehearts.

The Tour of Hope 2011 - 500: Going the Xtra Mile Against Cervical Cancer will kick off at the TriNoma Mall in Quezon City on May 28, 2011 and its first stop is in Tarlac City. Then the cyclists will ride through La Union, Vigan City in Ilocos Sur, Laog City in Ilocos Norte, and finally in Paoay where the bikers will get to see the Paoay Church, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Bravehearts is a non-profit organization initially led by the Cervical Cancer Prevention Network (CECAP) for the Cancer Institute Foundation (CIF). It is dedicated to raising awareness on cervical cancer prevention and is supported by a growing number of women, including prominent personalities such as Abbygale Arenas-de Leon, who is the current president of the organization, Senator Loren Legarda, Pia Magalona, Ellen Tordesillas, Tessa Prieto-Valdes, Jeena Lopez, Maimai Davao, Joyette Jopson, and Suzi Entrata. Carey Mulligan stars in "Never Let Me Go"

We once saw Carey Mulligan in "An Education," a film where she had a breakout performance as a school girl seduced by an older man. The role had her nominated in the Academy Awards and consequently brought to her feet countless movie offers that she surprisingly turned down. However, "Never Let Me Go" was an opportunity that, according to the actress, is too good to pass up.

"Never Let Me Go" is the screen adaptation of the 2005 novel written by Kazuo Ishiguro. It tells of the story of 3 people who meet in a boarding school and develop a strong bond of friendship and love. But the students in the boarding school are no ordinary pupils because they are clones that were raised to become organ donors of the sick.

"Never Let Me Go" opens on March 2 exclusively in all Ayala Cinemas so better log on to www.sureseats.com to see check the sched and buy tickets. The movie is from 20th Century Fox and is distributed by Warner Bros.
