Happy Birthday to Me from Me

I thank God for the blessings He has given me this past year and that includes the online jobs that I have been constantly offered. With the "rakets" I was able to buy for myself a spanking new Blackberry Curve 9220 as a birthday gift.

Bananas for Diabetics

Everyone knows I don't eat ripe bananas. But sometimes, I do force myself to have one especially if I need extra energy. Bananas are a perfect source of fiber and potassium. Fiber helps keep the body's cholesterol in healthy levels and also helps in combating obesity. Meanwhile, potassium helps lower blood pressure by reversing the negative effects of too much salt in the blood.

The Asian Flavors Diabetes Cookbook

The American Diabetes Association is launching The Asian Flavors Diabetes Cookbook this June. Written by award-winning author Corrine Trang, it aims to make diabetes meal planning easy for everyone. It's the first book that takes the elegant, easy-to-prepare, and naturally healthy recipes and meals of Asian cuisine and crafts them specifically for people who need to follow specific eating plans. A compendium of comfort foods from all over Asia, Trang updates classic recipes from Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and Southeast Asian cuisines to make them work for the health-conscious cook who wants to put healthy, delicious meals on the table.

I'm particularly excited about this book because I'm Asian and a lot of diabetes cookbooks in the market today feature recipes that we don't usually serve at the dinner table. Not to mention that we don't have much of their ingredients here in the Philippines. Also, Asian food has a flavor of it's own that we don't usually taste from other regional fare. As Tang writes, "In the kitchen, we’re constantly exploring textures and colors. We play with flavor profiles that include sour, bitter, salty, sweet, and spicy notes—the essence of good food. Applying these characteristics to a wide variety of vegetables, fruit, seafood, and meats is part of a centuries-old tradition." I agree!

No exam, no fuss

I have been often offered life insurance that I almost signed up for. Take note of the word "almost." The offer is great, the price is affordable, yet it wasn't for me all because I am a hypertensive diabetic. Yes, most of the life insurance plans nowadays have a clause that prohibits people with underlying medical conditions to avail of the plan.

Going back to cross stitching

I'm thinking of going back to cross stitching. Cross stitching has been a hobby for me way back when I still had lots of time in the world. With that, I meant not having all these freelance online tasks that I'm doing right now. Cross stitching was my way of relaxing; a chance to be alone with myself and my thoughts.
