Last March 28, Rap received his award as 5th grade gold medalist in their school along with the other awards from his extra-curricular activities. My husband and I are both happy and proud of his achievements. And because he's been a good boy this school year, we both decided to finally give him his wish... a brand new iPad 2!

What you Need to Know about Diabetes and Hearing Loss

With improper management of diabetes, women can experience greater hearing loss as they get older.

New research at the Henry Ford hospital in Detroit has revealed that if you are a female with diabetes and have not had the ability to maintain a healthy state with drugs, you have a greater chance of loss of hearing as you age.

Clinical Trials

A clinical study looked at women between the ages of 60 and 75 that have diabetes and were able to maintain a healthy state had less hearing loss than those patients who had poorly controlled diabetes. In fact, women who had the ability to manage their diabetes well had hearing ability comparable to non-diabetic female patients in the same age category.

Happy Birthday, Doray

Today marks the birthday of my dear sister, Doreen. She's a year older than me but most people say I look older because I am the one who acts like the big sister. She's well-loved by people because she's wittingly funny and spontaneous. At the same time, her jolly being can be often misunderstood as tactless and insensitive.

Georgina Wilson fights 6 skin problems with Garnier Pure Active

I encountered skin problems like any other girl who entered puberty. But since I was still young and carefree, I didn't give particular attention to facial care. My routine was simple - washing with soap and water. That's it. And the pimples just kept on coming. Although I didn't have large breakouts, I had horrible whiteheads that I try to squeeze out when I'm bored. It just kept coming back because my pores eventually got larger from the constant pricking and squeezing. It's foolish of me to do that. But of course, I only realized that now.

Believe it or not, the beautiful Ms. Georgina Wilson also had her share of pimple horror stories. Apparently, she put toothpaste on her pimple when she was younger because she thought it would dry it out. But with a lot of skin care options today, she believes that Filipinas can now easily win against skin problems.

Statins for diabetics

Back in 2008, routine blood test results revealed that I had high levels of low density lipoprotein (LDL) or what is commonly known as the bad cholesterol. Since I'm diabetic, the cardio-internist who saw me prescribed simvastatin which I religiously took for a month. Fortunately, my cholesterol went back to healthy levels and I'm off simvastatin or any other statin up to now.

I recently read a post on Diabetes Self Management site which was about a study that showed how statins increase the risk of developing Type II diabetes in post-menopausal women by 48%. Then again, here's a surprising fact. In a study published by the Journal of the American Medical Association, it was revealed that only one cardiovascular event (meaning stroke or heart attack) in every 155 people taking statins in high doses is prevented. On the other hand, only one in 498 people taking high dose statins may develop diabetes.

Fight heat stroke this summer

With summer officially arriving here in the Philippines, I started to feel my palpitations again. My blood pressure has gone up, too, despite the fact that I shied away from meat because of the Lenten Season. I read that extreme hot weather can directly affect blood pressure and can cause heat stroke especially to children, senior citizens, and those with high blood pressure or heart disease. That's when I remember that my dad's latest stroke happened during the first week of May when it was very hot and humid here in the country.

Anti-wrinkle solutions from your kitchen cupboard

Having wrinkles is the greatest fear of most women. They would spend thousands of dollars either to erase or prevent the lines that appear on their face. I'm scared of wrinkles, too. I want to look as young as possible but not to the point of having a facial procedure.

Fighting wrinkles need not be expensive. In fact, there are anti-wrinkle solutions that you can get straight out of your kitchen cupboard. Here's just a few of them:

  • Virgin coconut oil - Massage on the face during bedtime.
  • Green apple and pineapple  juice - Apply for 10 to 15 minutes on the face.  It can also help relieve cracked skin.
  • Mashed banana - spread all over the face and leave for 15-20 minutes.  Then, rinse with warm water.  It can help fight skin dryness and the appearance of fine lines.
  • Mixture of grated potato and apples - Chill and apply around the eyes at least one a week.  It can prevent crow's feet and moisturizes the skin under the eye.
  • Sugar granules mixed with olive oil - Use to gently exfoliate your face.

Oral health and heart problems

I am a sucker for dental health. I can sleep with make-up on but I can't not after I brushed, flossed, and gargled. Let's just say that I'm that I hate halitosis and I'm scared of heart diseases. Yes, ladies and gentlemen, tooth decay may cause heart disease.

It's all about the bacteria. The bacteria that thrives in tooth decay and dental plaque can cause blood clots in the arteries. These blood clots can then trigger heart attacks. Meanwhile, dental plaque causes gum infection that can also cause an inflammation in the blood vessels.

Pfizer launches pneumococcal vaccine for adults

As a parent, I am most often concerned about the health of my son. His immunization schedule is updated even up to now that he's almost twelve years old. It gives me the peace of mind that he's protected from life threatening diseases. For so many years, I have grown accustomed to thinking that vaccines are for babies because they have weaker immune systems. But just recently, I learned that vaccines are also important for adults, especially for those age 50 and above. One such important vaccine is the one against pneumococcal disease.

Dr. Rontgene M. Solante, president of the Philippine Society of Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (PSMID) attests that 88% of deaths of Filipinos age 50 and above are due to pneumonia. Moreover, these individuals who suffer from pneumonia may also experience paralysis, mental retardation, seizures, learning disabilities, and hearing loss.
