Happy 100 Years, NIVEA!

I vividly remember the blue tin can that made my mother's eyes gleam with joy back when I was a little girl. NIVEA Creme was her favorite balikbayan box pasalubong because it was a vital part of her beauty regimen. NIVEA Creme became our special skin cream, too. But since it was just for mom and it's often kept inside her make-up bag, I would secretly dip my finger inside the tin can every once in a while. Yep, Mama was somehow madamot of her kikay stuff back then especially if it was her NIVEA creme!

But don't you know that back in 1911 when NIVEA Creme was first launched, the tin can wasn't blue at all? NIVEA Creme was first packaged in a yellow tin can decorated with green art nouveau tendrils. The blue tin can was first introduced in 1925 as NIVEA sought for a more contemporary design.

Nivea Tin Evolution

Just as the tin can evolved, NIVEA also added more reliable skin care products under their name. People of different gender, age, and skin type now enjoy a wide variety of NIVEA skin care products.

Problems with Windows Movie Maker

I've been having problems with my laptop's Windows Movie Maker. I'm trying to publish the video of my niece's debut but it keeps on telling me that some files can't be found and that publishing cannot be continued. What's even more disappointing is that the message will only appear towards the end of the publishing process. That means I waste almost two hours for each publishing attempt just to find out that it can't publish the video!

I really feel so bad. I dedicated two days in editing videos and putting them together and then this! Now, I'm even more discouraged to buy the samsung projector I've been eyeing because I know that I can't even make decent home movies on my computer.

Can anyone recommend a light and reliable movie software?

I'm a Hulkmaniac

When we were younger, my siblings and I were not that much into watching the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) games. We did cheer for Ginebra especially if it's a championship match but basically it's because our dad was a Ginebra fan. Actually, we are more fond of watching the wrestling matches shown on TV. We each had our idols and mine is, of course, Hulk Hogan. The day he left WWF/WWE was the day I stopped watching wrestling. So just imagine my surprise and delight when I saw Hulk Hogan grace the season 10 of American Idol! See the video below:

In my opinion, there is no other wrestler like Hulk Hogan. There is a charisma in him that the others don't have. Seriously, my Ate Net and I often got emotional when he's hurt even though we know that the moves are staged. He was my personal superhero for the longest time.

How about you? Are you also fond of Hulk Hogan? If not, who's your wrestling superstar?

Could Be Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

While we were on vacation in Bicol, I experienced shooting pain on the index and middle fingers of my right hand. It did not happen only once; shots of pain continued in intervals of 5 to 10 minutes for more than 48 hours. This kind of pain is no stranger to me as I have already experienced it before when I was still playing the piano. I know that, this time, it could be carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS).

Now, the shooting pain comes once in a while but I experience numbness from my wrist to the ends of my fingers. My right wrist is also painful sometimes, but I manage to relieve it by massaging it with oil. I know I have to schedule a visit to the doctor to have my wrist checked but what kind of doctor should I see? I don't have a single idea, really.

Common knowledge about CTS is that it is caused by work-related activities such as clicking the computer mouse and typing. However, diabetes also raises the risk of having carpal tunnel syndrome. CTS happens when the median nerve suffers from the pressure of thickened and swollen tendons in the hand. High blood sugar levels makes glucose attach to the tendon proteins which explains the swelling.

My sister, who is a licensed pharmacist by the way, advised me to take in Vitamin B supplements. I haven't bought the meds yet because I want to consult with a doctor first. Gosh! This is the last thing I need right now. I have lots of article writing and editing backlogs.

No to third-hand smoke

The Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) has finally imposed a smoking ban in public places in all major and secondary roads in Metro Manila. Violators of the smoking ban will be charged Php 500 on the first offense. Those who cannot afford to pay will have to sign up for an 8-hour community service task. I live outside the Metro, but I am still thankful of this ban because I'm a frequent pedestrian in the Ortigas Business District. I cannot even enjoy a few minutes of solace at Ortigas Park because there'll always be a smoker sitting at the other end of the bench where I am.

While the smoking ban is applied only for major thoroughfares, I hope that smokers can also consider not smoking inside their homes. We all know that cigarette smoking is already bad for our over-all health. So is second-hand smoke or the smoke that one inhales from the cigarette of somebody else. But don't you know that there's also third-hand smoke that's as hazardous as the other two?

Third-hand smoke is what's deposited on surfaces long after the cigarette has been put out and second-hand smoke fades. Imagine the harmful toxins settling on the walls, the couch, and even on the toys of the kids! I believe that this is also more harmful to us diabetics since we are already at high-risk of heart problems compared to others.

Smoking poses health problems not only for the smoker but also for all those around him/her. If you are a smoker, do yourself and your loved ones a favor and stop smoking. Not only will you save your lungs, you will also be spared of other costs like a smokers term life insurance. Conversely, if you are living with a smoker, inform them about third-hand smoke and the health problems it brings.

I conquered my fear of heights!

This is me and the boys during the Canopy Ride that we took at Treetop Adventure in Subic Bay. Oh yes, I survived, scratch-free!

We rode the cable ride 100 feet above the ground amongst the high branches of this rainforest. I was a bit scared during the first of the 5-part cable ride. But I eventually got the hang of it especially after my husband agreed that we exchange places, him in front and I in the last seat.

Surprisingly, I wasn't afraid for my safety. I was afraid that my Havaianas would slip off my feet and fall to the ground. I was actually wearing rubber shoes earlier during the day but I had to change into my flip-flops and say goodbye to my cute softball socks when the sole of my right shoe detached itself after being soaked for hours in the pouring rain. Yes, it was raining so hard that day but we still went on with our adventure even when we ended up dripping wet!

I gave myself a pat in the back after the trip. I think I can do the Tree Drop next time!
