Human Nature Hydrating Facial Wash for my boy

My boy is starting to have pimples. He's only ten years old but I think he's hitting puberty early. He used Lactacyd before as his facial wash but it failed to get rid of the pimples on his face. I thought of having him use the Human Nature Hydrating Facial Wash sampler which was part of my sampler kit when I joined Human Nature. Amazingly, it worked for him. This is what he's been using for months now.

If you're thinking of ways on how to get rid of pimples, maybe you should try this. It's gentle, effective, and organic. Not only that, it also supports our local Filipino farmers.

All for the love of Ducati

I am not a cigarette smoker. The only one who's smoking in the house is our houseboy. Although I have no control over his lifestyle choices, my only rule is that for him to smoke outside our property. Every time he smokes, he goes to the vacant lot beside our house.

This time, however, I have to give in to his smoking-related request. Marlboro has this raffle contest that he wanted to join. But since he has no government ID yet, he asked me to fill up the raffle entries for him. I instantly fell in love with the Ducati which is the grand prize! Our agreement was, if he wins that Ducati, he'll sell the bike to me at an uber low price. In fact, all he wanted was just enough to buy himself a laptop. He wants the Macbook, by the way.

I may even buy my helper Acid cigars should there be another raffle, lol! Who doesn't love a Ducati anyway?

Ready for the outdoors

In one of our few impulsive buying moments, the husband and I bought a big camping tent and sleeping pads good enough for the three of us! Now the problem is, we haven't got an idea where to camp out, hahaha!

I was thinking of having a road trip to Ilocos Norte this coming Lent but it dawned on me that my husband would not enjoy it. Plus, it would probably take a huge toll on our car maintenance budget. So I did some research and found two beach resorts in Batangas that have camping sites.

The boys are excited over the idea of us camping by the beach. It's indeed awfully more inconvenient than staying in the resorts' comfy rooms. They're actually gorgeous as the Kill Devil Hills vacation rentals in North Carolina. But then I realized that our boy needs this camping trip. He's overly sheltered in the city already. It's time he gets introduced to the outdoors.

What do you think? Do you know of camping sites near Metro Manila other than the ones in Batangas?

Preparing for a disaster

Last Friday, March 11, 2011, I spent the afternoon until late evening sitting on the couch and watching the news about the earthquake and tsunami that happened in Japan. I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw images of homes and other structures being swallowed by the enormous amount of seawater that came inland because of the tsunami. My eyes were also on my computer screen as a chatted with an aunt who is in Japan. Thankfully, although a bit shaken and emotional, she's safe as well as my other aunts who are working over there.

Adding to my state of shock were the news advisories telling the public to get ready for the tsunami that will hit the eastern part of the Philippines. Thank goodness, it did not do much damage to any of the 19 provinces that were supposed to be hit by the waves from the Pacific Ocean. After having experienced Ondoy, who can blame me for being so paranoid? I immediately thought about preparing for the waves of water that was supposed to come.

The American Red Cross advises the general public to prepare these 6 disaster must-haves:

  • Water - 1 gal./person/day.
  • Food - Non-perishable; should also include pet food if you have pets.
  • First-aid kit - Always keep one in your home and another one in your car.
  • Clothing and beddings - Complete change of clothing per person. Should also include rain gear and protection from the sun.
  • Tools and emergency supplies
  • Special items - Essentials for infants or the senior members of the family. These will also include toys or games for kids.

All of these items should last for at least three days. They should also be kept in sturdy, water-proof containers.

Experts also suggest having a disaster plan for the family. Honestly, I still haven't devised one. All this step entails is having 2 meeting places just in case we get separated at the height of a disaster. These 2 places should either be:

  1. A safe distance away from home; or,
  2. A safe place outside the neighborhood just in case a family member can't get home.

I hope you also find this post helpful. We will never know when a disaster will strike so it's best to be always prepared.

Almost a Doktora

Eleven summers ago, I and a schoolmate of mine were brought to Talim Island, Binangonan, Rizal as part of our summer immersion. It was my last summer in UP and I felt that I can't graduate until I get to experience the Ugnayan ng Pahinungod's Summer Immersion Services Program. I lived in the island for a month. Although I was a little disappointed that I was only sent to Binangonan (which was two towns away from where I live), I eventually understood the community's need for doctors.

In one summer, I almost became a doctor without scrubs. Armed with boxes of medicines, toothbrushes, and what-have-yous, I and my partner went to different barangays to help alleviate simple health problems of the people of the island. The people longed to have even just para-health workers in their communities but the government then cannot afford to send them one. I was in a bit of shock, actually, because it was almost the year 2000 and some of the people there died because of lack of free health care.

We were treated as health workers in the community. It was a big challenge for me because, I was only 18 and all I ever had was the limited health care training I had before being deployed to the island. Nevertheless, the people there treated us as what they would treat doctors in white lab coats. There was never a day in the island when I felt that I wasn't important in their community.

In one of our weekend medical missions, visiting volunteer doctors from UP taught me how to circumcise. Yep, at 18, I already saw and circumcised hundreds of you-know-whats in all ages, colors, and sizes! I think the oldest guy was 24 and was about to be married! They lined up because there wasn't a single hospital in the island. The handful of barangay health centers do not have medicines and tools to perform this simple surgical procedure. I wasn't even given a hospital uniform. All I had on me was a manila paper draped in front of my shirt to avoid spatters of blood.

It was my most memorable summer and I remember each day up to now. I thank God and UP for giving me the opportunity to be a "doktora" in that island. I believe it has helped me appreciate more what I have and to not want more than I can possibly have.

Why I Got Myself A Credit Card

Believe it or not, I know people who do not want to have a credit card. They feel it's kinda risky to be carrying plastic money. My brother, on the other hand, isn't that confident with his finances and he doesn't want having debt that he stays away from credit card agents.

When I was still teaching in preschool six years ago, a credit card agent came to our school and offered us application forms. I filled it up and my application was immediately approved. I'm still carrying that card from the same bank. I think I reaped more rewards than risks and losses in having a credit card.

Here are a few reasons why I decided to get one:

  • I wanted to build credit. I needed to be credit worthy and I think this is one of the reasons why our housing and car loans got approved easily. I haven't applied for any personal loans yet because I honestly can't afford paying for one. I strive to maintain my being credit worthy by paying my bills on time and paying the whole monthly dues whenever I can.
  • I wanted to be able to buy plane tickets online. Yes, my husband and I love to travel but we only travel when we have extra money to spare. It is just convenient to be able to buy tickets and other products online with a credit card. Oh, I also pay for my domain renewal and site hosting with my credit card.
  • I wanted to enjoy the perks offered by my credit card company. I earn miles for every Php 33 pesos I spend. I also get to exchange my charge slips with SM gift cheques or Starbucks treats.
  • I wanted to have something I can use for emergency purchases. Thankfully, I haven't used my card yet for this purpose. Emergency purchases for me will have to include my maintenance meds and extra hospital charges.
Having a credit card is not risky. It doesn't always have to end up with you being in deep debt if you know how to handle your finances wisely.

Do you have a credit card? What are your reasons for getting one?

Sick, Tired, Overworked, Sorry

This week was the worst of weeks in terms of my health. I caught the flu bug last weekend which left me sniffling, coughing, and fighting a 40 degree fever. I even felt so bad for not being well enough to welcome my husband back from his week-long business trip. I had plans of cooking something special because he missed eating my home-cooked meals. Instead, he came home seeing me sick.

But what's worse is that I'm still not well enough to run this Sunday in the Run United 1 2011. I think that one of the major reasons why I got sick was because I overworked myself in training my running legs. Plus, I had to be the one to get my boy from school every day. Not to mention this crazy weather we're having right now.

I'm still coughing and my nose is still clogged. It's better to miss the race than finding myself lying in a hospital bed surrounded by medical carts, don't you think? Anyway, my boy's still pushing through with his 500-m dash. I'll still be there to take photos and show moral support.

Insured for a year

I just received my complimentary personal accident insurance plan which I signed during the Sunpiology event that I attended in November last year. I am glad to have received the plan even just for a year because I really need to have one at least until my husband's new company finally grants us our health cards.

I am actually fond of insurance plans. You'll never know when an accident or a medical emergency will happen so it's best to always be ready. Besides, there are many affordable insurance plans nowadays. For those who are on a budget, a term life insurance is a good choice. Investopedia defines it as "a policy with a set duration limit on the coverage period." Once the plan matures, the investor can choose to renew it or not. Some term life insurance plans even have an amount of money that the investor can claim once the plan has matured.

It's best to look for an insurance agent to have the full details of term life insurance explained to you should you be interested to get one. Don't forget to shop around and settle with the most affordable yet with the most comprehensive package. Freebies are definitely a plus, too.

Thanks again to Sun Life Financial for this accident insurance!
