Made in China

Part of our country's history are the Chinese tradesmen that came over with their wares even before the Spaniards discovered our seven thousand and one hundred islands. The Chinese are known to be very skilled business wise. Even some of the richest families in our country at present are Filipino-Chinese. Some early inventions are born of Chinese ingenuity and this just shows how the Chinese has helped shaped our civilization.

But not everyone is happy with Chinese products. With the event of globalization, China has become active in exporting their products worldwide. They compete well with other imported products by bringing down prices. But being less expensive has made most their products suffer in terms of quality. The "Made in China" tag has eventually earned a not so good the reputation among consumers.

But then, in a country such as ours, cost is still prioritized over quality. During the start of the school year, price conscious moms and dads trooped to Divisoria to buy school supplies. They wouldn't mind if these are made in China. What's important is the price. This is one of the reasons why there are so many Chinese immigrant businessmen in the country today. In my location alone, two stores selling ceramic wares and porcelain tiles sprouted in the past month. I haven't checked out their products yet but I saw pretty porcelain wares by their window displays.

I am the type of consumer who considers quality over price. If I see that the quality is good, I would buy it even if it's Chinese. Heck, my laptop's made in China as well as my year-old TV phone! How about you?

Home Office Concerns

Who ever thought working from home is easy hasn't even tried it yet. As much as I appreciate the times I am able to spend working in bed or in my kitchen, I am now realizing that there's more than there is in being a work-at-home mom.

For one, I need to upgrade my home office furniture. We still need to save up on that. After the major renovations that we made in my son's room, I am left with his old desk and a folding chair. At first, I was happy with how my work station looked like. It was simple and space saving.

Later on, I realized that the old desk and the folding chair doesn't match at all in terms of height. Since the chair cannot be adjusted, I end up getting wrist and back pains after a few hours of typing. My immediate solution would be to prop my laptop on a breakfast tray and work in bed or right smack on the living room carpet.

This cannot go on for long as I am already feeling severe back pains that get too uncomfortable even when I am lying down at night. I'm going to start solving the problem with buying an ergonomic office chair come payday.

King of Pop is Gone Too Soon

I logged in this morning only to get RSS feeds of news about Farrah Fawcett's demise. After a few minutes, here comes another feed stating that the King of Pop was rushed to the hospital and was rumored to be dead. LA Times has just confirmed that Michael Jackson, who was 50 years old, died of cardiac arrest a month before starting his scheduled comeback concerts in London.

Jackson was pronounced dead after arriving at the hospital in a deep coma. I heard some news saying that paramedics found him in his rented Bel-Air home not breathing already. His place is just six minutes away from the UCLA Medical Center. It could have been the stress from all the preparations of his comeback concert. Some reports said that he's not happy about some of the locations. The tickets are sold out already in all of the locations. Awww.... it would have been a huge success.

The King of Pop will surely be missed. He's already a legend. I am now sharing a video of his performance of "Gone Too Soon" in 1992.

Some Freelance Work Requirements

I have started doing some freelance work since the summer vacation started. My husband and I decided that I should take a leave from teaching and stick with freelance work so I can work from home and have more time for our son. Besides, traveling to and from work is not convenient anymore. I am having trouble seeing clearly at night especially when my blood sugar level is lower than normal.

So I started looking for sites that connect freelancers to clients and got some projects. I have chosen to do some freelance writing first although there are more data entry and virtual assistance jobs that require less thinking at the same pay rate. I would have preferred to take some of that too because writing sometimes can be tasking. I still do not have a DSL connection here at my place so I am stuck with writing work for the meantime. An Internet Fax to phone service would be a plus for a virtual assistant as it would allow for cheaper calls and fax services to and from other countries.

A VOIP service is a good choice for someone who speaks with relative, friends, and business colleagues overseas. Head over to Spectrotel and enjoy their internet-to-phone deals. Check out Spectrotel's profile for more exciting offers. How I wish I already have a DSL connection so I can get one already.

Self-Medication Considerations

My mother-in-law, who was also recently diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes, was supposed to be arriving from the province tomorrow for my husband's birthday. We received an urgent call from her that she cannot come over anymore because she's experiencing pain in her joints. We are suspecting that her uric acid is above the normal levels. She shrugged it off as something normal for aging people She bought some medicines to alleviate her pain.

Diabetics, like me, can not self-medicate. Our medicines need to have the go signal of our doctors unless we want our blood glucose level to be affected. I have a few trusted branded medication that I can easily take without prescription. Through the years, I have proven that these do little to affect my blood glucose level.

If you do not have special conditions like I have, you can easily refer to resources of Cures for Ailments and be somehow assured that these cures can work well for you. However, take time also to consult a doctor to be more on the safe side.

Be aware of the different cures for ailments by learning from the expert -- Dr Amen of the Amen Clinics. Head over to The Amen Clinic's profile for more information.

It's Never Too Late To Learn a New Language

Our backpacking trip to Vigan and Baguio last March gave me the opportunity to study a little Spanish through a PSP game called "My Spanish Coach". Traveling light compelled me to not bring my laptop and it took me away from my online activities for a week. It was a blessing in a way because I had the chance to bond more with my family, especially with my boy who got interested in the game, too.

I was already studying and completing sentences about food and places in the game. When we are not playing the game, Ralph and I try to exchange simple sentences in Spanish. My son has a more retentive memory than me and it became easy for him to speak simple sentences in Spanish. He's learning Spanish faster than I have that it would look like I bought him some learn spanish for toddlers videos.

Once we got back from our trip, I had to go back also to reality and to my piled up tasks. I didn't get the chance to play the game and learn Spanish words again. I will find time to do some once my schedule permits me to. It's never to late to learn a new language. It may seem useless now but there may be opportunities in the future when I can use my knowledge of the Spanish language.

Celebrating During This Time of Economic Recession

No, I am not ranting because my husband had to work and my dad's in Boracay that we didn't get to spend Father's Day with them yesterday. Being at home the whole day yesterday just made me think a lot about how other families are spending the day with their respective dads. Some of my plurk pals had lunch or dinner in a special place while the others just cooked up something special to eat at home.

Different strokes for different folks. It's really the thought that counts. In this time of economic recession, being frugal is best. Anyway, most of these holidays are just marketing strategies to urge people to spend and buy gifts for their loved ones. Still, my belief is that one can splurge if he has the resources to do so. Never go way beyond the budget. Who are we to condemn someone who buys, let's say, an expensive motorcycle jack for his dad if he can afford it. In the same way, we should not judge the person who can just afford to give a kiss and a hug to his dad on Father's Day.

"Ice Worlds" at The NIDO FORTIFIED SCIENCE DISCOVERY CENTER

What is ice for you? Is ice just something that you put in your glass of iced tea to refresh you on a hot day? Or is it part of the snow that you dream of experiencing? For creatures of the Arctic and Antarctic regions of the Earth, ice is everything. It should be important for us, too.

We are more dependent on ice than we realize. Ice is the principal amplifier of temperature shifts in the Earth. Its existence affects climate change. All of these facts are showcased in the documentary film, "Ice Worlds" that had an advanced screening at the Nido Fortified Science Discovery Center, SM Mall of Asia Complex, Pasay City yesterday. It was presented by SMART and sponsored by NIDO Fortified, Coca-Cola, and BDO. The event was also supported by the WWFF, Mrs Field's Cookie Cafe, Digipost, A-Z Direct Marketing, and Timelife. The event's online media partner was Yehey.com. Ralph and I were fortunate to be invited to be part of the event.

Aside from discussing how ice in our world's polar caps affect climate, the film also explained how the creatures in the Arctic and Antarctic regions depend on ice for survival. It also showed the existence of ice in the other planets like Saturn and Neptune and their respective moons. The film was narrated by British actress Emily Watson, star of "The Water Horse: Legend of The Deep". It was produced in cooperation with the University of New Hampshire, the Houston Museum of Natural Science, with the support of the National Science Foundation.

Before the screening began, the participants were first held in the conference room where Mr. Jose Ma. Lorenzo Tan, CEO and Vice Chairman of the Board of Trustees of WWF Philippines spoke about responses to climate change. Ralph got scared about some scenarios that Lory shared to us. He said that we should be visiting Palawan now before its airports get covered in water. More lands are disappearing because of global warming!

A raffle was held after the screening. Ralph and I were both lucky to win cool jackets from SMART. Other winners received gym bags and SMART phone kits.

"Ice Worlds" regular screening begins on June 23. Get a chance to win awesome prizes by answering the questions that they will be asking after the show. For ticket inquiries, contact 556-0331.

Litratong Pinoy: Imposible Ba Ito?

Is it really impossible to put a living human head on a fruit platter? With the help of science, almost nothing is impossible.

This photo was taken when we visited the Philippine Science Centrum last month. The table only has three posts and the sides are surrounded with mirrors. There's a space behind the table where the body is hidden while the head is slid through the hole and on top of the fruit platter. Awesome, don't you think? There are also other "impossible" feats that science has made possible in this museum. So if you are in the vicinity of Marikina City, do take time to visit the Philippine Science Centrum.

Photo Hunt: Lock

These are the locks that guarded my precious thoughts long before blogging began. I kept them all these years. Countless sibling wars happened back in the days when our brothers would raid the hiding places where I and my sister kept our diaries. Oh, what a riot it was! I am glad how this tag brought back the funny and trivial fights we had over these diaries.

How I Do My Blood Glucose Level Test

I am finally sharing the steps on how I test my blood sugar level. Why now? Well, of course, I am still bragging about the new blood glucose meter that I received from my sister on my birthday! Hahaha!

Lately, my blood sugar level has not gone above the safe level. In fact, it registered 87 mg/dL the other night, one point below the 88mg/dL - 123 mg/dL safe zone. I felt nauseous that night. I am taking 500 mg of Metformin thrice a day and I limited my intake to once a day since my blood sugar level is going lower than usual. I think our consumption of muscovado sugar and brown rice helped a lot in keeping my blood sugar level low. But then again, it puzzles me because I am a Type 2 diabetic. Hypoglycemia or low blood sugar is often seen in Type 1 diabetics.

Normally, I take my blood sugar level in the morning immediately after waking up. When I feel sick, I also have to check it. The other day, I took a test two hours after I had my lunch just so I can see if my blood glucose has gone up after the nausea spell I had the other night.

The first thing I do in testing my blood sugar is, of course, sanitizing my hands with alcohol.

Next, I take one lancet and insert it to the lancing device.

After putting the lancing device's cap back on, I set the puncture level depth to 3. 1 is the shallowest while 5 is the deepest. On some days, I can get a puncture with just using level 2.

Then, I take a test strip and carefully insert it on the meter.

I set the lancing device on my thumb, give it a nice little pull, press the blue button, and close my eyes for the prick. You know, I still can't get the hang of it. I still get a little scared of this step although it doesn't hurt that much. By the way, I choose to prick my thumb because it has the least responsibility in typing.

After the dreaded prick, I gently massage my thumb a bit to form a droplet of blood.

I get the glucose meter and let the strip touch the blood droplet on my thumb. I hold it in place for six seconds until the result appears on the monitor of my blood glucose meter.

I get 101 mg/dL that day which is safe. My target level is always 100 mg/dL to 110 mg/dL. Then I record it on my log book for reference.

So there. Daily blood glucose monitoring is hard (and expensive!) but I need to do that to keep myself on track. Rather than ranting about the pain and inconvenience of this task, I prefer to be think positive and be thankful of the fact that I am luckier than other diabetics who do not have the luxury of having their own blood glucose meter.

Litratong Pinoy: Pangarap Ko

Ikaw, anong pangarap mo? Maaari mo ring ibahagi ito sa .

Ever since I was diagnosed with Type II Diabetes, a lot has changed in my life. There are foods to avoid, things to do, and medications to take. I had to sacrifice some of the things I love for my health. If I was only single, I could just take everything lightly. But because I have a son and a husband who's counting on me, I need to keep everything on track.

This is one of my dreams. To eat a Banana Split without the fear of having my blood sugar levels going haywire.

What are you dreaming of? Write about it and share it at .

I Say No To Con-Ass!

No to Conass!

I know I am so late in voicing out my resentment towards the passing of House Resolution 1109 in Congress last June 2. As a Filipino blogger, I am ashamed that I haven't done anything to inform others about this earlier. To think that I am a UP Political Science graduate! I guess, the hype of celebrating my birthday overcame what was supposed to be the most disappointing act of the House of Representatives so far.

For now, just forgive me and let me just use the saying "better late than never". Somehow, my sin is still forgivable compared to what the 170 Representatives who sponsored HR 1109 have done against democracy.

Why now? Why not wait after the elections? These are the questions that haunt me as I read countless posts and news bits about what happened that night in Congress. It just shows how much these Representatives want the powers that be to remain in power. To think that we were the ones who brought these Representatives in office. They were supposed to represent us and and us alone! Yes, I am ranting because my Congressman is on the list!

I am disgusted by the fact that democracy was shot right in the face that night inside the walls of Congress. I also feel cheated upon. For four years in my life, I was constantly reminded on the checking powers that are supposed to be existing between the three branches of our democratic government. The Legislative body should be independent of the Executive branch and not giving in to its whims!

Today, June 10, 2009, crowds will convene against Con-Ass in Makati and in several areas in the country. As I will be attending to mommy duties and cannot possibly attend to any one of them, voicing out my resentment online will be the least I can do. I am posting the "No To Con-Ass Badge". Feel free to grab the badge and post it in your site. You can also get it in different sizes here.

I am also sharing the "No To Con-Ass Video" here for everyone to see. This is supposed to be aired on TV but since the organizers are still raising funds for airtime, it is shared on You Tube. You can also share this on your blog or social networking site for others to see.

Lastly, I am posting the list of the 170 Congressmen who sponsored HR 1109.
