I survived MILENYO!

My goodness! This is the first time in years since I've last experienced a Signal No. 3 typhoon!
Typhoon Milenyo (international codename: Xangsane) is the strongest typhoon to directly hit Manila in 11 years. I remember the last one was Super Typhoon Rosing which was categorized under Signal No. 4.

If you're not in Manila, you will not be able to imagine the horror we've been through. Not to mention that we've just returned from Naga City a day before the typhoon struck the city. Yup, God really is good! We left Naga City last Monday night (Sept. 25) and arrived Tuesday morning in Manila. That Tuesday night, Naga City (and the whole of Bicol as well) was struck by this fierce typhoon. We can't get feedback from Mama and our other relatives in Naga, Albay, and Daet, Camarines Norte. I bet they still do not have electricity, phone connections, and cellphone signals. The last text I received from Mama was during lunchtime last Tuesday when she confirmed that she already received the passports I sent through courier. (Thank God the delivery was saved from the typhoon, too!) She also texted us about how bad the weather in Naga was. Then, that was it. I tried texting them today but still no response.

Wednesday afternoon (Sept. 27), the Dept. of Education announced that Thursday classes in all levels are suspended. During that time I felt the department was overreacting. It was a hot day, a little humid. It was dark but it was not raining.

Thursday morning (Sept. 28), it was raining hard. Daddyjun had to leave the car behind and commute to work because Pasong Tamo was already flooded. The rains started during the wee hours in the morning. He had to wear rubber sandals to work that day. I did my usual routine of checking my mails and my online classroom for announcements, etc. Daddyjun called and told me to prepare the flashlights, candles, transistor radio, etc. I also charged the cellphones and Ipod. The electricty began fluctuating around 9am. My DSL connection was acting funny, too. I shut the computer down around 10am.

Around 11am that day the wind blew harder. I had to shut the windows in our bedroom because the rain drops were coming in. The electricity was cut before lunchtime, Rap was excited to have lunch with me by candlelight. By 12 noon the horror started. We watched how the trees resisted the strong winds. There were flying metal sheets, flying tree branches, and plastics! The trapal that we used to cover our garage threatened to fly out, too! Jun and I went out to reinforce it with wires but the wires gave in in no time. Jun rolled it and crudely tied it up and we went inside the house. It was not safe to be outdoors. The flying tree branches were non-stop. It continued for about an hour and slowly died down until 2pm. That was the time when I was able to go outside the gate and see the damage the typhoon had done.

Everything was in havoc. A big ipil-ipil tree lay down on the street a few meters away from us. That was the reason why cars and tricycles had to go back and take another route towards Pasong Tamo. The big ilang-ilang tree of our front door neighbor had fallen branches. And they had to prune it afterwards. I called up Papa in Pasig and he told me that parts of our house's roof was damaged. Electricity was not restored until yesterday afternoon, that's about 26 hours of blackout in our place. We were luckier than most people in Luzon. In Pasig, the electricity was restored only this morning. The storm's over but, for people most affected by Milenyo, picking up the pieces is the hardest thing to do.

Our final exams that's supposed to be taken today is moved until next Saturday. Now, that gives me something to smile about.

Naga City 2006

Got back yesterday from our weekend getaway. This is the shortest stay we've had so far but the most fruitful one.

Sept 22

Left Philtranco Pasay for Naga City at around 9pm. We were booked for the Gold Service bus but we're shocked at the service we received! No more bus stewardess, pillows, and blankets. I already expected that there will be no meals since it was posted at the ticket booth that night trips will be non-stop. Buti na lang I bought inflatable pillows that were supposed to be extra pillows for Rap. The supposed to be non-stop trip stopped at Quezon around 12 midnight because the driver was already complaining that he had not yet eaten his dinner. Paki ko? Duh! Nonstop nga dapat, eh di dapat hindi kami nagmadaling mag-dinner sa pagkainit-init na Gold Service Lounge nila. There were only nine passengers including us that night. Kung alam ko lang, we shouldn't have bought a separate ticket for Rap.

Sept 23

We reached Naga Bus Terminal at around 5am. We were picked up by Dong. Rap was still sleepy when we arrived. He slept for only two hours during the trip. Excited yata. By the time we got to the house, he's back in hyper mode. We ate a light breakfast and slept afterwards. Rap did not sleep but played with his cousins downstairs.

Ate Cel cooked a hearty lunch of Kare-kare, Laing, and balaw (bagoong). Burp! Kaka-miss talaga luto ni Ate Cel. Her version of Laing is different from my mother's cooking which piping hot! Hers is sweet. Halatang caterer for kids.

Around 2pm, we're on our way to Cagsawa Ruins in Daraga, Albay. It's a 2 hour trip from Naga City. We hired a jeep to accommodate us all. We were 7 adults and 3 children all in all. Megan had to stay behind because she has to attend a practice for her English class' play. Rap slept before we even reached the boundary of Camarines Sur and Albay. Hehehe... napagod ang bata.

We reached Cagsawa at around 3:30 pm. We took pictures and toured the place. We did not buy souvenirs. Hirap magdala pabalik ng Manila eh. Next time na lang siguro when we bring our own car. We stayed for an hour then we headed back to Naga.

We reached the house late. The jeep's gas gauge turned out to be defective and we ran out of gas. Lucky for us that we were already in the outskirts of Naga, not to mention that the Petron station was just a walking distance away. We had dinner and slept early.

Sept 24

It's Papa's birthday. I tried calling him up as early as I could but he was already at church. So I just packed our things for the day's trip. We're going to the provincial capitol at Pili. The kids wanted to swim and the adults wanted to check out the new Camsur Watersports Complex.

We called up Kuya Edward and family to share the day with us. We had lunch first at the Eco Village and let the kids enjoy in the swimming pool. The picnic area is so cool and relaxing. I was able to reach Papa and greet him. Lloyd, Christy, and Clyde were with them. Kaka-guilty kaya lang we can't postpone this trip eh.

After lunch, at around 1pm, we went to the Camsur Water Sports Complex. It's the newest attraction of the province. Water sports afficionados can do wakeboarding, kneeboarding, and waterskiing. The rates are super low and the place is great! Imagine, Daddyjun was able to try kneeboarding and wakeboarding for just Php125/hour! Equipment rental (vest and helmet) is just Php 40/hr. Some amenities are still under construction. Just check out the website for more info.

The children were still swimming when we got back to the Eco Village after an hour. They were enjoying the jacuzzi. Naiinggit ako so I changed and joined them. Minutes after I sat in the jacuzzi, the heavy rain poured down. Hmp! Kainis.

By 6pm we were back at the house. We had dinner and were in bed by 9pm.

Sept 25

We had a mini-tour of the churches of Naga City. First, we went to the Basilica and prayed to Our Lady of Peñafrancia. (I hope she grants my wish soon.) We tried visiting the Peñafrancia Museum but it's closed so we went inside the church instead. After that, we headed to the Naga Cathedral. That's where Dong, Ate Cel, Mama, and CJ fetched us.

We accompanied them to the Digitel office afterwards. Mama applied for a DSL connection. We also canvassed computers. We had lunch at LCC mall where Tita Ops and Tita Andy joined us. After lunch, we bought pasalubongs and our bus ticket. We went back to the house after that. I had to pack our things pa.

By 9pm we're seated in an Amihan Bus back to Manila and the reality that I'll be taking my final exams on the 30th. Waah!

Oh, well! Here are the pictures, by the way:

Off to our Maogmang Lugar!

It's time we have a vacation, even if it's a terribly short one!

We're going home tonight, on board a Philtranco Gold Service bus from Pasay, to Naga City. It has been more than a year since we've last been there. We'll only be staying until Monday night when our butts will be riding the bus again back to Manila. Rap has to be absent for a day.

It's the nth time that I missed the Peñafrancia festival. It's the second time we'll be going home a week after the fest! Daddyjun has this perpetual allergy to traffic that's why. The streets of Naga City become overcrowded during the festival week. The last time I attended a Peñafrancia festival was when I was just six or seven years old! Daddyjun talaga, Kill Joy! He has an excuse this year, though. He was still on duty last week. O sige na nga, forgiven na. I need to get a Mazapan de Pili once we get there to help me forget. Hehehehe.

I'm planning to make a travel blog when we get back. Syempre I'll post everything here. O sya! Have to get our bags packed na!

Out in 5, 4, 3, 2, 1.... Babush!

Happy-Sad

Kinda felt this way yesterday.

I had to pay my tuition fee for next semester at PNB-Evangelista yesterday. We had so many errands for the day which included bringing Rap to school and Daddyjun's check-up with his urologist.

We decided to leave early with Rap, around ten in the morning. after our late breakfast. We went to the clinic's laboratory first so Daddyjun can give his urine sample so the result will be ready by the time his doctor's in. It takes an hour before we can get the result.

Off we went to Evangelista after the lab. It was already 11am and Rap had to be in school by 12 noon. So, we decided that Daddyjun stay with Rap at the nearby McDo so he can take his lunch there while I go to the bank and pay my tutition fee.

It took me an hour before I finally paid my fees. I don't know what's bugging the PNB people in this branch. In Sta. Rosa and Los Baños, I only had to fill up 3 regular deposit slips, write the account name and number of UPOU, indicate my name and student number in the slip, and pay it. Yesterday, I had to rewrite everything in a bills payment slip. I insisted that that was the first time I'd do that (and told the teller I'd kill him if the slip is not accepted by the learning center, hehehe).

Back at Mc Donald's, Rap was almost done with his lunch. They were seated by the window. Outside the window, there was an old woman sitting on the pavement. It was a pitiful sight, I tell you. I never felt guilty all my life. There I was with my family eating Chicken Mc Do and french fries and the old lady was staring at us like she was begging for mercy. I asked Daddyjun to buy something for her and he bought her a burger mc do meal.

We asked Rap to give the food to the old woman. The old lady smiled and thanked Rap with all her heart. As we went back to the car, I took a glimpse of her carefully unpacking her burger and smelling it first before she took a small bite. I almost cried. All of a sudden, I remember my Lola eating balut! Questions flooded my mind: Does she have children? Does she have grandchildren? Why isn't somebody taking care of her? She was not begging for money so I was convinced that she's not with a syndicate. It seemed that she just didn't have anywhere to go.

I regret not having more time to talk to her and ask her my questions. We had to go back to the doctor's office after sending Rap to school, do some grocery shopping, fetch Rap, and bring him to his soccer practice. I know the meal we gave her is just temporary. Something long term should be done to help her. I wish we could have done something more.

I was happy that after all the bad things I've done all my life, I get to do something good and even showed our son how to do it. I felt sad because this was not enough.

Our Family Tree

Haay, I've been busy lately. Not with my studies but with our family tree. Almost two years ago, the Tordecillas Family had a small gathering in my Lola Encar's place in Muntinlupa. (Lola Encar is my Lolo Mandoy's sister. Lolo Mandoy is my grandfather.) The oldies planned a grand reunion in Aklan on March 2007. I don't know if it would be in Makato or Boracay.

I started our family's e-group, Pamilya Tordecillas, in June of 2005. A year after, I made up our Pamilya Tordecillas friendster site to reach out to more relatives. Now, the e-group and the friendster site is growing.

I have also taken the task of becoming our family historian, at least for my immediate relatives. I set up our family tree in www.tribalpages.com . Now, I'm searching for long-lost relatives through the net.

Our clan is big but it is not hard to search for relatives. My lola told me back then that if the "Tordecillas" has a "c" in it and not "s" as in "Tordesillas" they are probably my grandfather's closest kin. She said that our ancestors changed the letter "s" to "c" to avoid being caught by the Japanese during the war or something like that.

So, maybe you know someone who might be our relative. Please let me know. Or maybe you can refer them to these links:

What Track Will I Follow?

Yesterday, I learned that my assessment form for the next semester only listed one subject. I was wondering why they did not give me the thesis subject. So I emailed the Faculty of Education and asked for some clarifications.

EDUC 300 (Graduate Thesis) will be offered on the first semester of A.Y. 2007-2008! My golly! I thought I would be done with my studies by the end of this school year! Looks like I'm still going to endure the pain of beating deadlines until October next year.

I'm enrolled in the Masters in Education program of the University of the Philippines Open University. I'm majoring in Language Studies. In our program, we get to have two options in order to graduate. Either we take the Thesis track or the Special Problem (non-thesis) track.

Here's the picture:

If I am going to take EDUC 300 (Thesis) next academic year, I would have to enroll only one more elective this coming semester.

But...

If I am going to take EDUC 298 (Special Problem) next academic year, I would have to enroll two electives next semester, and take the comprehensive exam before I can graduate.

So, which track will I follow?

I was in a panic last night when I received the email. I had to decide as soon as possible. The assessment forms will be released supposedly today.

I asked advice from the people closest to me. Daddyjun told me to take the non-thesis option. Producing a thesis is quite time-consuming and might be heavy on the budget. Tita Ops and Mama, both educators with a Masters Degree, told me to take the thesis option. They told me that if I don't produce a thesis, I cannot enroll in post graduate studies in the future. Well, that's far from my mind right now, But, then again, we are planning to put up a school come two to three years from now. I wouldn't want to close my doors to post grad studies this early. Mama also told me that I should take the thesis track so I will feel the pride and contentment after I graduate. She told me that if I don't produce a thesis, that would make my graduate studies incomplete.

Hay! I'm still in a daze. I haven't given my decision to the FED yet. So give me some advice as soon as possible, okay? Enrollment for the second semester is until the end of this month only.

Christmas Season Officially Starts NOW!

How hard is it to get some paperwork done?

Today, I'm torn between finishing my paper that's due yesterday and posting something today.

During these days I start to think over my decisions in life. Why, oh WHY, did I ever enroll myself in graduate school? But then again, I only have one semester to go! Yipee! Oops, reality check... that remaining sem will be the most toxic since I will be preparing my thesis. :(

Paper or blog? What the heck, it's the first day of September! And to us Pinoys, it's a big deal. Today, at least in the Philippines, the Christmas Season of 2006 officially starts!

Oooh, I can't wait to hear some Christmas songs over the radio. And the countdowns. And the decorations. And the parties (of course, why would I forget these?)! What is it about Christmas that makes me super duper happy? For me, it's the happiest time of the year, as it should be.
